Boozy Gummy Bears and Comfort Food at Duke’s NYC!

o

There are those days when I just don’t feel like eating all healthy and nutritious. We have all had those days. When you just can’t eat another salad or baked fish plate. You’d almost rather eat a bowl of dirt with ice cream and chocolate syrup on it. I had one of those days recently where I threw the calorie counts out the window, and decided to go have a fun meal nearby at the newly opened Duke’s on the UES of NYC.

Walking in we were greeted by the friendly hostess and were offered any seat we wanted that were available. As it was early on a weekday the place was mostly empty. Took a seat at a booth and were quickly taken care of by a terrific waitress. She made some perfect recommendations for food and drinks and answered any question we had about the menu and specials.

My observations –

Cool 70’s/80’s pop and rock playing.

Fun roadhouse decor.

Flat screens everywhere. Must be a good football weekend spot.

Plenty of cocktail concoctions. Boozy Gummy Bears!

Happy hour half prices on select libations and appetizers.

Jello shots and syringes! Continue reading Boozy Gummy Bears and Comfort Food at Duke’s NYC!

Munching a tasty box close to home! Akami Sushi in NYC.

Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box lunch special!

It’s a steamy swamp-assy Sunday afternoon in NYC and I was starving. Did not want to walk far in this heat wave. Looked around for a tasty new box in my hood that I could bite into and not become a soaked mess.

All I had to do was walk around the block and this hot box was right in my face! Boom!

Akami Sushi located on 1st Avenue up in Yorkville is one of those places I never ventured into, even though it is right next to one of my regular bodegas. Bento Box lunch special for $9.50 until 4pm! Great value. Nothing like wrapping my lips around a tasty box close to home!

I read over the menu outside this sushi joint on 1st Ave advertising some lunch specials that run until late in the afternoon and realized they offer many choices. I’m always into getting my lips around a tasty new box so I slipped inside. Heck, now I kick myself for not eating out this box much sooner. Continue reading Munching a tasty box close to home! Le Viet Cafe – a tiny NYC spot for tasty Viet/Thai street eats.

Kimchi Fries. Do I need to say more? Look at that!

NYC seems to have an endless array of eateries of all styles and origins that take up residence here year in and year out. You can literally eat all around the world here in the five boroughs. Here is another new spot for good grub that has popped up within walking distance from my crib on the UES/Yorkville part of town. Hot damn! This makes my mouth and belly very happy!

Le Viet Cafe is a tiny resto that serves up some cheap and tasty Viet and Thai style street food. Even though it’s been open for a few months now where the old Buddha BBeeQ used to be we had not checked them out until a few weekends ago. Narrow and efficient looking the space can hold 12-15 people at most with a few tables along the one wall. Decor is minimalist but the service is very friendly. Menu is so very affordable and the portions are just about right for the price. Lunch specials during the week are also offered. I definitely need to go back now and try out some of the soups, sandwiches, fried rice dishes, and assorted appetizers. Yeah, you can say I enjoyed my first meal at Le Viet. The Milton NYC – a new classy locals joint in Yorkville.

Wonderful new bar in Yorkville NYC for a classy cocktail in a terrific setting. (yeah, it’s been a while since it opened but I have been lazy catching up on my reviews to write) I’m always looking for new spots to check out close to home and The Milton located around the corner from where I live is basically a stone’s throw away. Good thing it’s stumbling distance as they make a mean cocktail here!

Some quick observations –

Pleasant date spot. Good for brunch, light dinner, or after work drinks. Attentive service and friendly bartenders. The type of place to wind down with a libation after a long day at the bar area, or to take your special someone out for a tasty bite in the dining room or out front on the sidewalk seating when the weather cooperates.

A decent mix of craft type beers on tap, and a nifty cocktail list. They make a pretty decent spicy bloody mary here too. On our last visit our group of four had a few rounds of these. Many places make a mediocre bloody with the mix coming from a bottle pre-made and store bought. These we could tell were made from scratch, the correct way. Yum.

The menu consists of American, Irish and English influences. Weekend brunch served too. Quaint seating in the back dining area. Kind of a mix of Irish snug and British pub. Looks romantic too at night when the lights are dimmed, candles are lit all around, and flowers are on the table. Cozy, classy, but not stuffy at all.

Hey, clean bathrooms too! For the ladies, there are hooks under the bar top to hang bags and coats on. That is always something my gal appreciates. It’s the little details like this which raises my opinion of a place. Bonus! Continue reading The Milton NYC – a new classy locals joint in Yorkville.
