Head Westville Young Man for Healthy Eats in NYC!

o

I’m a busy man lately. Been running all around Manhattan performing errands, getting some dreaded Christmas shopping done, dropping off a few coats for charity, and also squeezing in some much-needed fun time with my friends. NYC is a magical place this time of year, and lends itself to a bit of overeating and overindulgence.

Yes, diets and waistlines take a beating during the holiday season.

That being said it’s always nice to have a spot like Westville to drop in for some clean and healthy eats to place your mind at ease, and make you feel a little better about yourself after the previous night’s egg nog consumption and over-eating at the company party. The Counter NYC – create your own burger feast!

o
Doing it my way with a veggie burger and salad combo. Pineapple for the win!

Yeah, yeah, I know. Here’s a guy who has quit eating red meats, steak, pork, bacon (my one regret), and burgers penning an opinion on a burger joint. In the godforsaken land known as NYC’s Disneyfied Times Square. How can he be so brazen? Really dude? Really bro?

Hey, don’t judge. I still like what I like and have an opinion. I am a New Yorker, so you know we all have one. Don’t know about all those giving this little joint sub par reviews on internet sites, and don’t really care, as I have to say during my visit here just recently in the tourist hell-hole known as “The Crossroads of the World” I kind of enjoyed my meal at The Counter in NYC.

Quick, courteous, and friendly service.

Clean and nicely air-conditioned. (Always a plus with me as I hate eating in swamp ass conditions.)

Small dining area with plenty of seating crammed in, and some counter spots by the tiny bar, but do-able overall. The high ceilings, large windows, and modern decor make it a chill looking spot and offer some cool views of neon signs at night. Makes it feel like a larger space than it is. Plus, weirdo people watching is a guilty pleasure.  Continue reading The Counter NYC – create your own burger feast!

There’s no meat in that? Really? It’s vegan? C’mon, you’re kidding. OMG this tastes amazing – like a party in my mouth!

That is what was going through my mind as I devoured the Seitan Chimichurri. It has this smoky flaver and slightly burnt edges as if cooked right on the bar-b-que. I could have sworn it was a meat product as it had great texture and substance. Served on skewers like a shishkabob. After this wonder I knew we were in for a treat. I had no clue that going meatless could be so tasty, but Candle Cafe on the Upper East Side of NYC enlightened me as to what delicious vegan cooking can be!

Now let me proclaim that I am a meat eater. I absolutely love love love steak, chicken, bacon, etc. If it moo’s I will eat it! But lately I feel a need to broaden my food horizon and try some healthier options. So here I was in a vegan restaurant. Continue reading Meatless? Me? Vegan delights at the Candle Cafe in NYC!

The Changing Seasons

Now that fall has arrived here in the Northeast the temperatures are dipping, the sunny days are shorter, and it also becomes a good time to re-evaluate eating habits. It’s very easy to fall into that trap of eating more of a comfort food diet during the colder weather while consuming many more calories. We all become creatures of habit and hibernate a bit during the fall and winter season as the warmer sunny days dwindle away. That being said, it’s also a good time to try out different varieties of food, and there are many vegan options out there to discover, especially when one gets tired of the “meat and potatoes” meals many of us eat in the winter season. One such place I discovered recently was Cafe Blossom located in the West Village, NYC. I openly admit to being a ravenous carnivore and prefer meat based meals, but many times over the past few years I have found a few vegan restaurants to be highly acceptable to my palate while serving up delicious plates of  meatless fare. Eating vegan is good for a chance of pace, while also being on the healthier side, and can taste flavorful too. Here is a recent discovery of mine that I was awarded Review Of The Day on Yelp for.

Cafe Blossom –

I know that I should eat a bit more of a “cleaner” diet and sometimes I get the urge to try out going vegan/vegetarian, but the meat eater in me is in a constant battle with that thinking. It’s like I have a devil sitting on one shoulder and an angel on the other constantly at odds. Well, at least for one night the angel won. Cafe Blossom made me totally think that I could actually enjoy the organic vegan lifestyle. Too bad I could never really cook the delicious plates that I tasted last night!
