Punk rockabilly surfer tiki bar. So much kitsch. So much fun. So many tattoos!
I started off another of my epic bar crawls at Otto’s Shrunken Head for happy hour. It’s kind of fitting that they have $3 pints of PBR of which I downed a few along with a shot of Jameson while listing to the DJ play an eclectic mix of punk, surfer, goth, and rock tunes. Since it was early still I had a chance to chill out as the crowd was sparse save for a sexy tattooed bartender who dug my Star Wars dancing Stormtrooper t-shirt, and the two tattooed ladies in cool throwback Bettie Page styled outfits that asked me to turn around and model for them. The crowd that was in there ranged from older sexy tattooed cougars, to younger hipsters, to fun music types, to punks, to rockers, and other kinds all mixed into one giant flaming tiki bowl of personalities. Half the crowd looks like they want to kick your ass, including the bartender if you piss her off, and the other half looks like they would be fun to get drunk with as they are all here for that one sole purpose. It’s a fun diverse crowd in a fun eccentric retro tiki themed bar! Continue reading Otto’s Shrunken Head – kitschy tattooed tiki fun in NYC!→
Great hidden spot on the UES / Yorkville for tiki like cocktails in a lounge setting. It’s almost as if a prohibition era speakeasy was mutated with a tiki bar dashed with a bit of the Maltese Falcon thrown in for good measure. When we walked in here I thought I had entered a bar somewhere downtown, but was so surprised that it’s in my hood!
More and more of these terrific spots are opening up around here and it’s another nice addition to the burgeoning bar scene that seems to be happening in the area. Why schlep all the way downtown and back when locally there are so many choice bars around here now? Some nights you just want to stay close to home. It’s as if King Kamehameha prepared this feast just for us during Restaurant Week in NYC! Probably one of the best, if not the most plentiful, options to take advantage of during lunchtime. Since I had a summer Friday off we were able to snag a seating on the last day of RW mid day and it was terrific. For only $24.07 a person we were amazed at the amount of food we received, on top of the excellent service. We literally rolled out of here – but not before sitting at the bar and getting ripped on some high octane rum tiki drinks after our meal!
Now, I love kitschy type places, and The Hurricane Club is no exception yet they do it in a more classy style. The ambiance and decor is spot on beautiful, trendy and chic, with a ton of seating, chandeliers, carved wood worked ceilings, palm plants, dim lighting, and a tiki bar anchoring the main floor. We sat in a semi-private room off to the side that made us feel as if we were in a tiki hut. The waiters and staff here are very attentive, professional, and within minutes had come over to place our orders and set us up with drinks. The menu here for RW had some great offerings and everything we ate was so good we wish we had done this place a few times for lunch! Continue reading Rock you like a Hurricane!
