Warped, witty, sexy, and sassy take on the Disney Princesses that would have Walt Disney rolling over in his grave!
I’m always up for some culture, along with some laughs, and off-Broadway sometimes offers the best of both worlds. Was more than happy to attend a performance of Disenchanted! as part of a Yelp night event. When I read about the show and found out the storyline was a take on the Disney princesses I knew it would be hilarious – and it was! I’ll admit that I am a Disney fan and have seen all the movies, been to the parks, bought all of Dark Lord Mickey’s merchandise, etc, so this was a no-brainer to be a part of.
The stage setup is simple with just a few props and backgrounds which works perfectly, and compliments the actresses just right for each of their numbers. The St Clemens theater is simple in itself and you get the impression you’re sitting in a school study hall with comfortable stadium seating offering a great view of the stage. Good acoustics and AC too which was surprisingly welcomed. Easy to get to off of Times Square and it’s located in a church. Yup, a church. No frills setup for sure, but very effective and intimate. Worked extremely well when they got the audience to participate in a sing along competition. Yes, that happened. If you are sitting as a couple in the front row center area you might become a focal point in all this. Be prepared to sing! Continue reading Disenchanted! Snow White & her Princess Posse invade NYC!
We have all seen the reports here of the bedbug infestation that is plaguing NYC over these past few years. Now the scare was recently heightened even more with reports of these blood sucking nasty critters on the N and R subway lines. Jeezus – we can’t even ride the rails back and forth to work without feeling all itchy and creeped out. As if some of our fellow passengers don’t already make us feel that way! Now along comes this performance that I had the joy of attending this past weekend that makes me wonder if the “Bedbug Apocalypse” is almost upon us. Bedbugs!!! The Musical at the off-off Broadway venue Arclight Theater was a campy treat for the ears and the eyes. Yup, you can say I was bitten.
I just adore anything with a high campiness factor, and this musical scored big points with me as it bit in deeply at my affinity for 80s’ rock, horror movie schlock, and goofy over the top fun. The premise is that it’s a “girl meets bug sci -fi musical comedy”. WTF you say? Well, you have to experience it to believe it. Think back to the midnight showings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, with a dash of Little Shop of Horrors thrown in, and then include diva pop candy such as Celine Dion, mixed in with an 80’s soaring stadium rock soundtrack and the Frankenstein born of this is Bedbugs!!! The Musical. Continue reading Itchy campy fun in NYC because of Bedbugs!!! The Musical.
Both my gal and I have seen many Cirque Du Soleil shows over the years and I can undeniably say that I am a big fan. So when we were offered the chance to attend the premier night event and afterparty of course we jumped at the opportunity as we had not seen Amaluna before. We knew we were in for a special evening for as soon as we stepped inside the big top tent were were greeted by servers in costume handing us glasses of champagne. Yes, please! Sure, I’ll have three or four of those. There was a terrific mix of people in attendence to see the show and everyone mingled among the exhibits, performers, and interactive showcases for the hour before showtime. There was a feeling of excitement in the air, and as we were led into the main seating area surrounding the stage everyone was taken in by the colors and sounds our senses were treated to.
We were now in the world of Amaluna – a mysterious island where beauty and courage await! Continue reading Cirque du Soleil – Amaluna under the Grand Chapiteau in NYC!
Sometimes you just want to see a bunch of guys up on a stage sing female rock and pop anthems. When that bunch of guys just happens to be The Dan Band you know you’re in for a rollicking good time with plenty of laughs thrown in. I was lucky enough to have scored a few blogger press passes for last night’s opening show of their four date residency at the fabulous Stage 48 event space. Dan Finnerty and his group of hired guns certainly did not disappoint while whipping the crowd into a frenzy of guffaws and sing alongs.
