Get your sweet tooth at The Sweet Shop in NYC!

34gg3345g

Accidentally found this place while out for a run. Needless to say I took an ice cream and candy break! What a terrific little store. Oh well – there went my run! How could I resist not taking a break to peruse the shelves at The Sweet Shop in my hood of the Upper East Side in NYC when all this candy goodness was beckoning me? It’s like I had the good and bad angels sitting on my shoulders, and the bad angel whispered evil thoughts and sweet nothings into my ear. Guess which one won out? The good angel was kicked to the curb as I headed inside this tiny pocket of candy wonderland.

I was greeted with shelves lined along each wall showcasing all kinds of candies from the old-timey style to the newest sugary treats on the market. Family owned and run they are very friendly and knowledgeable. Even handed me some samples to try just for walking in and saying hello. Now that’s a welcoming perk. Get me all wired up on candy why don’t you even before I buy anything? I wasn’t refusing! My evil angel was smirking in delight. Continue reading Get your sweet tooth at The Sweet Shop in NYC!

Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club in Brooklyn NYC!

l (7)

You can shuffle my board anytime, baby!

Can’t get any better than at the Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club in Brooklyn, NYC. Shuffleboard, booze, DJ, cabanas, food truck, and pink flamingo wallpaper in the bathrooms. Drinks in mason jars. Pure brilliance! A unique concept totally out of the ordinary as I love the old school aspect of it blended in with a modern flair. Time to break out the Tommy Bahama shirt, cargo shorts, and sandals. Can’t forget the fruity drink with an umbrella in it.

Man, the last time I played shuffleboard was down in Florida with my long ago retired aunts and uncles. It was always considered an “old folks” game but Royal Palms has bumped it up a notch into the new millenium by making it hip and trendy for the younger generation now. The facility here rocks. Terrific bars on site serving up great cocktails and a good tap beer list. DJ and bands on hand rocking the house. Super airy large location with ten state of the art shiny shuffleboard courts. Cabana seating along the far wall overlooking the action. A built in garage and window for rotating food trucks to come in and serve guests. Shuffleboard leagues. Parties for groups. Bingo night. Live music. This place is just pure fun. Retro styling with a Miami flair. They have nailed it! This ain’t your grandpappy’s shuffleboard! It actually can be called cool to play shuffleboard now. Balls of steel at Modern Pinball NYC!

Every time I walk into Modern Pinball this famous song sung by The Who pops into my head –

Ever since I was a young boy,
I’ve played the silver ball.
From Soho down to Brighton
I must have played them all.
But I ain’t seen nothing like him
In any amusement hall…
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pin ball !

He stands like a statue,
Becomes part of the machine.
Feeling all the bumpers
Always playing clean.
He plays by intuition,
The digit counters fall.
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pin ball !

He’s a pin ball wizard
There has got to be a twist.
A pin ball wizard,
S’got such a supple wrist.

How do you think he does it? I don’t know!
What makes him so good?

Modern Pinball is a pinball lovers paradise! So many great machines here! Continue reading Balls of steel at Modern Pinball NYC!

Otto’s Shrunken Head – kitschy tattooed tiki fun in NYC!

Punk rockabilly surfer tiki bar. So much kitsch. So much fun. So many tattoos!

I started off another of my epic bar crawls at Otto’s Shrunken Head for happy hour. It’s kind of fitting that they have $3 pints of PBR of which I downed a few along with a shot of Jameson while listing to the DJ play an eclectic mix of punk, surfer, goth, and rock tunes. Since it was early still I had a chance to chill out as the crowd was sparse save for a sexy tattooed bartender who dug my Star Wars dancing Stormtrooper t-shirt, and the two tattooed ladies in cool throwback Bettie Page styled outfits that asked me to turn around and model for them. The crowd that was in there ranged from older sexy tattooed cougars, to younger hipsters, to fun music types, to punks, to rockers, and other kinds all mixed into one giant flaming tiki bowl of personalities. Half the crowd looks like they want to kick your ass, including the bartender if you piss her off, and the other half looks like they would be fun to get drunk with as they are all here for that one sole purpose. It’s a fun diverse crowd in a fun eccentric retro tiki themed bar! Continue reading Otto’s Shrunken Head – kitschy tattooed tiki fun in NYC!
