Dominique Ansel is my NYC pastry dominatrix!

Considering I just worked out at the gym a block away, and then walked into this place to buy some delicious pastries I can pretty much say that workout was a waste. But these treats were so damn good! Waistline be damned!

The pastry dominatrix had me in her clutches. The gluttonous Adonis in me approves!

Dominique Ansel Kitchen in NYC has become famous for its mouth watering pastries, and with worthy acclaim. As for the actual facility it’s kind of small, with one community table to sit at, and a funky stair case pyramid with stadium-like seating that rise to the ceiling. Kind of a cool spot to drop in on and enjoy a tasty pastry, cup of cappuccino, or some nice hot soup and a croissant on a cold wintry NYC day. Butter Cookies Old School Style at La Delice in NYC

o

Butter cookies!!!

Not many of these old school family style bakeries are left in NYC so when I happened upon this one in the neighborhood that I work in I had to drop by for some cookies. Maybe it was the large bakery chef statue standing outside the entrance that drew me in. That, or all the delicious looking stuff in the windows. La Delice Pastry Shop has been doing it right since 1935 and is a long-time mainstay in this part of town, Kips Bay. In an era where it seems that the city is getting rid of and losing many of its old-school, iconic, and cultural mainstays it’s always reassuring to discover a few of these places still surviving. To me, there is nothing like real bakery style cookies made the old-fashioned way, and not just pumped out by a factory pre-packaged and mass-produced.

Why are we in such a rush to destroy our history? Continue reading Butter Cookies Old School Style at La Delice in NYC

Yeah, sometimes I can be a bit fancy enjoying a spot of tea. (pic not taken at King’s but pinkies up anyway)

Yeah, we fancy. Or, at least we pretend to be once in a while. Most normally we have champagne wishes and caviar dreams to go along with our all too real beer bottle budget. That being said, I have no shame with using a Groupon for afternoon high tea in a fanciful quaint place featuring old world charm on the UES!

Even though we have lived in the neighborhood for many years we had never checked out King’s Carriage House on the Upper East Side of NYC. We decided to be a bit froo-froo one day and partake in their weekend afternoon tea here when I found a Groupon for it that was actually quite a good offer. Yeah, I can clean up a bit and be a bit fancy when it’s a good deal! Continue reading Be Fancy with Pinkies Up at King’s Carriage House in NYC.

The Fat Man Strikes Again!

As we were walking around the lower east side I was suddenly tackled and attacked by my arch enemy! As I struggled mightily against my larger foe and punches were exchanged he placed a cloth over my nose and I drifted into sleepy blackness. Hey, does this rag smell like chloroform or cannolis? When I awoken we found ourselves in Little Italy and standing in front of another 100 year old institution of NYC gluttony – Ferrara’s

Now, I have made it a point to go out of my way to check out the super kitschy and old school spots that are still surviving in and around NYC before they all totally disappear. Gentrification is a bitch, and even though we can’t halt the wheels of progress, it’s still nice to see some of these businesses thriving in the face of impending change. I’m a sucker for a tasty pastry, and the gluttonous villian that led me here knew that as we walked up to the front door. Upon entering we were greeted by a large glass counter display housing all of Ferrara’s fabulous looking desserts. “Yes, I’ll take one of each!” I thought as my nose pressed up against the glass leaving a trail of drool cascading down!
