Each year now I put myself through one of these mud runs and obstacle course races. Whether it’s a Warrior Dash, Tough Mudder, Urban Mudder, etc. 3 miles, 12 miles, 5 miles. Each year I end up a bit bruised, battered, bloodied, and scraped up. I do it for a cause. To give something back. Anything.
They say it’s a young man’s game. I’m probably one of the older dudes out there on event day. I don’t let it defeat me. Maybe I’m crazy. Why do I put myself through this pain? Because I can. Because I won’t ever give up. Life is too much fun, and too short, to sit on a couch and watch it all go by. Even if what I do makes a tiny bit of difference in someone’s life it’s all worth it to me. It’s worth the aches and pains my body feels after these races. Plus, I will admit I do enjoy the feeling of accomplishment when I cross that finish line.
I recruited my bud Francisco to get out there with me for his first OCR and we conquered the first ever Urban Mudder NYC in 2015! It was a terrific day and experience. Even with a sunny hot 88 degree day out we crushed it. Boom!

Well, that was something out of the ordinary! When going away on vacation the majority of normal people out there do something relaxing and fun. You know, the normal stuff like laying on an island beach, going on a cruise, doing Vegas or Disney, maybe even jetsetting to Europe to see the world. Some even do the staycation thing or hang out visiting family. Nope, not me being the mildly disturbed individual that I am. For some idiotic reason I decided to train for months to start my vacation off with a Tough Mudder which is one of the more grueling events one can partake. They even make you sign a “Death Waiver” to be allowed to participate. Not only is it physically demanding but also mentally taxing especially when running it solo as I did. I targeted the July 12th Upstate NY event. For months leading up to this my nights and many mornings included jogging for miles, lifting weights, and basically living in a gym. Eating healthier. I can’t say that it was a total waste of time as it sure paid off! In fact, I had a blast at the Mudder and actually did pretty well. Other than some minor injuries, bruises, and scrapes I walked off that course feeling like a champ and exhilarated. It was an amazing feeling knowing that I succeeded doing something I set out as a personal goal, and overall not many people can claim to taking on the challenge of this event and conquering it. Definitely not a walk through the park.
As those of you who follow my blog know I had been training to get back in shape to run in the Warrior Dash that occurred this past weekend in New Jersey. Well, I have to say that it was an absolute blast! It was probably the most fun I have had in a long time. Physically demanding, mentally taxing, and I totally loved it! By the time I was crossing the finish line I was banged up, tired, cut, scraped, and bruised. Yet, the feeling of victorious accomplishment had me fully exhilarated. Call me crazy but I wanted to do it again!
The Warrior Dash was everything I hoped it would be. I had read about these mud runs and they have become the hot new thing for those with an adventurous athletic fervor, and taste for something different from the typical fitness regimen. Talk about taking it to the next level! Even though I have been going to the gym for years, lifting weights and jogging the treadmill, I knew I had to prepare with more intensity to get ready for this. I added in actual running outside (and I usually hate running), along with a more advanced weight training plan and proper nutrition over the eight weeks leading up to the dash. Plus, it had been many years since I actually competed in an actual athletic event. I looked at the Warrior Dash as a way to coax my mind and my body back into the athletic arena, and get back into fit shape. I didn’t want to embarrass myself out there!
