Saint Vitus was the God of Heavy Metal love on Valentine’s Day!
In my never-ending search for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Venues in and around the NYC area, I can now at least say there are a few who still wave the headbanger flag proudly in Brooklyn.
Based in an unassuming spot in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, this darkly lit bar and live music venue does it right. Reasonably priced booze as compared to most NYC bars, super friendly bartenders and staff, a heavy metal DJ spinning a killer mix of old and new rocking tunes, some great memorabilia behind the bar, terrific photos and posters along the wall, and the prerequisite graffiti strewn bathroom. (OK, even though the loo was a dive, it was surprisingly pretty clean. Even the ladies approved – always a plus.)
Every once in a while I wander the streets of Brooklyn NYC looking for new spots to discover for my drinking pleasures. Sometimes I prefer a small cozy candle lit bar with an artsy vibe. Soft music playing. Just to chill out over quiet conversation, or to be lost alone in my thoughts. Not too long ago a friend recommended Sample for us to go get a drink and chat after the recent event we were at. From the outside it’s a nondescript looking place. Walking inside it was narrow and darkly lit, which suited my mood perfectly. It was nearing closing time but we took a few seats at the bar anyway and looked over the drink list which is printed on these small strips of paper on a stand. Very “shabby chic” style. She pointed to one and told me how good it was when she was here last time. I had no preconceived notion of what I was hankering for so hey, when in Rome, do as the Romans do! Oh Yorkville, you are making me even love you more. Bondurants is an awesome new bar addition in the area! Super craft beer selection that rotates weekly. Superlative whiskey list. Some terrific house cocktails to choose from along with a small eclectic food list. Inviting rustic decor with cool rock music playing. A more adult mixed crowd that flies in the face of the frat boy clientele in the area. How did this wonderful place happen to show up here and not in Brooklyn or the Lower East Side?
Oh, that’s right! Because the UES/Yorkville part of town is starting to explode with great bars and restaurants all over! Once the 2nd Ave subway is finished this will become the hot spot of town to eat and drink at even more so. For those of us who live up here we know this is the “undiscovered country” with many gems that those who refuse to venture above 14th street even know about. That’s ok, because we like it that way. I don’t even have to leave my hood anymore to have a great beer, quality cocktail, or tasty meal!
Yorkville: The final frontier. To explore strange new bars, to seek out new restaurants and new gathering spots, to boldly go where no man has partied before! (as narrated by William Shatner)
In this hilarious new comedy based on the best-selling book of the same title, audiences are welcomed into a fun-filled world of insider advice that could only be culled from that most insightful of individuals: the gay man. The play is set at a local university auditorium where the English department holds its monthly meet the authors event. Robyn is the shy and studious moderator of the event and this month’s featured author is Dan Anderson of Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man. With the help of a hunky staged assistant named Stefan, Dan aims to turn this meet the authors event upside down with a highly theatrical, audience interactive sex tip seminar. Will Stefan’s muscles be used for more than moving more than heavy scenery? Will the power of Dan’s tips prove too titillating for even Robyn to resist? As with everything at this event…that is for Dan to know, and you to find out! Continue reading Win FREE tickets to Sex Tips For Straight Women From A Gay Man in NYC!→
