NYC offers up so many great places to see, explore, and experience. There are a multitude of spots to eat a fabulous meal, take in entertainment, enjoy a delicious cocktail, view culture, and revel in history among others. As a long time resident of this gotham we call home I have yet to really hit up all the things I want to see and do. There is just always something going on here and not enough time to be a part of it. Yet, there is one dreaded place in NYC that “real New Yorkers” refuse to go on a normal bases – Times Square. This Disneyfied version of what use to be grungy and grimy Times Square is a beacon for people from all over the world to visit when arriving here on vacation. In 2012 NYC had a record breaking 52 million tourists visit the city, and I could swear all of them were in the Times Square area! This part of town becomes a frickin’ nightmare for the local New Yorker to navigate, and we all get a bit nauseaus just thinking about having to be there. Unless we head there to take in a show on Broadway we never, ever, really want to venture there. Even then, it’s a quick escape onto the subway or in a cab as soon as the show ends. “FLEE” is the first thing we think of, as this tourist trap hell hole frays every nerve in our bodies.
It’s strange, as even though I still love seeing Times Square all lit up at night like a Christmas tree, I just can’t fathom ever really hanging out in that part of town for any amount of time. Annoying tourists, bad eateries, and lame street performers all add up to avoiding the area like Lindsey Lohan avoiding a jail sentence. I love drinking beer. It’s one of the highlights of my weekends. Well, that and any other day I can imbibe a tasty brew. Who am I kidding? I can drink beer every day if I could but then I would have to face the realization of being a raging alcoholic! Living in NYC there are so many watering holes to get your drink on. Most times I prefer the local spots, beer bars, speakeasies, pubs, and dive bars. Occasionally I will hit up a club but those can get pretty obnoxious and pricey. My favorites though are the golden oldies. Those places that are from an earlier era and a time gone by. I’m a bit of a history buff and what better a combination than having a cold beer in the hallowed halls of one of my favorite bars in NYC – McSorley’s Old Ale House. In a city where it seems you have to mortgage away your life savings just to live here sometimes you have to make some tough decisions when it comes to spending. Especially when it comes to nightlife, dining, and fun time! The majority of us are barely getting by as most of our paychecks are handed over for rent, bills, and the basic necessities of life. Hey, one must have enough toilet paper on hand at all times! We New Yorkers are a city of people that work hard and play hard. After a long work week we still find a way to go out and party, even if that means digging into our cash pile meant for bills, or we dig in the couch cushions and coat pockets for enough change to have some drinks. Isn’t it a thrill when you come up on some dollar bills you had stuffed into a pocket and forgot about months ago? Heck, I need to find some way to keep my thirst for good booze quenched!
Now that Friday is here after a long work week the weekend is beckoning with evenings of bar hopping and debauchery. The afternoons will be swollen with pubs broadcasting college sports and baseball, while the nights will be overflowing with partiers. Beer will be flowing. Cocktails will be served. Dancing will be had. Debauchery will be on the agenda.
Most of all the BRO’s will be out in full effect! All looking alike as they head out for the evening in their matching clothing choice of BRO-niforms. What? You don’t know this look? You don’t recognize what I am talking about? Well, let me paint a picture for you. Take it from me as I have seen this look over and over and over. I live on the Upper East Side where it’s BRO central. Up and down along 2nd Avenue is a litany of frat bars and sports pubs. It’s the place to go on weekends for the frat boys and sorostitutes who follow them. Let’s break this down, shall we? Continue reading It’s Totally Bro-Tastic!!!→
