Take a break from gambling at Dan Rooney’s Cafe & Bar

345Every once in a while we like to do a little gambling, but don’t want to schlep down three hours to Atlantic City. Closer to NYC is Empire City casino, which is really a racino, and while nowhere near as good as AC as the slots are tight it does offer a quick alternative to satiate a gambling crave.

They have done some renovations to the joint, and added in a few new spots to feast at after making a deposit into the one-armed video machine bandits. One such place to have a meal and brew at is Dan Rooney’s Cafe & Bar. During our last trip to the casino we decided to drown our losing sorrows in a pint of beer and a hot meal at this Irish sports pub.

Our verdict? Decent food, beer, and sports bar but overall service is slow and inattentive.

Rotisserie chicken entrée was a solid choice. Sides are extra but the carrots were a good option as they are seasoned great, and onion rings were large and battered well but not greasy at all. Also, we ordered a whole chicken which was more than enough for two people. I felt the prices were fair and the food was actually pretty decent, and a little better than I expected for a sports bar in a casino. Ice Cream Joy at Main Street Sweets, Tarrytown NY

o
The smell of freshly made waffles and sweetness in the air is intoxicating as you walk in the front door. You get in line and anxiously wait your turn to view the multitude of inventive flavors. Diet? What diet you think. I ain’t on no diet today!

There are so many great flavors to choose from here at Main Street Sweets! I counted over thirty, and all are homemade with natural ingredients. You almost try to convince yourself that you are eating healthy! I could tell this is a well liked local place by the lines I constantly saw here over the weekend we spent up in Tarrytown, NY. Yes, I have to admit that I ended up on that line twice. Bad, bad, bad boy!

I love that they offer a sampler cup which is an ingenious way to try out five different flavors of mini scoops. It’s like a pu-pu platter of sugary goodness! Cheap too at only $3.25 and totally worth it as this cup offers just enough to satisfy the ice cream cravings. Oh, who am I kidding, as I could have eaten three of these at a sitting! Still, it was crazy good. Continue reading Ice Cream Joy at Main Street Sweets, Tarrytown NY

This NYC wino enjoys his vino tastings out on Long Island!

Award winning sparkling wines at Sparkling Pointe Vineyards. Can I try them all?

One great advantage of having family out east on Long Island is the chance to escape the concrete jungle of NYC for a while and spend a few days out there. This past Christmas week I had off from work so we crashed at their place for a few days to enjoy the holiday together. Where they live also offers a quick drive over to the North Fork of the island to hit the wine trail. What better way to spend an off day from work than partaking in numerous tastings of delicious vino! I love craft beer but also enjoy a taste of the grape too. I’m not a discriminating booze hound. If it offers a nice buzz, and tastes good, I’m all for it! Paired with some cheese, crackers, grapes, and assorted charcuterie it makes for a groovy afternoon of imbibing. This wino loves his vino! Check out the vineyards we happened upon during our afternoon wine tasting excursion the day after Christmas –

One Woman Wines & Vineyard

Wine tasting in a little shed! No, really, it is a little shed. Look at the pic I put up. Inside the decor is nicely done in a country farm kind of way. There were already about eight people in it when we got there so we had to squeeze in and wait our turn. Only room for one person serving the wine tasting behind a small bar area and he was very friendly, while also offering suggestions on other wineries to check out along the way. Buffalo Snow, Elf on a Shelf, Cocaine – All kinds of crazy stuff!

Am I the only one that loathes the bombardment of Christmas commercials and decorations that we are subjected to these weeks before Thanksgiving? It’s already been one of those weeks here in NYC and I feel as if I’m being abused by the Elf on the Shelf. Now let’s be real here for a moment. That damn thing is creepy. No way do I want a psychopath elf in my house. I don’t know why this strange tradition was started anyway. It’s supposed to be moved to a different spot each night or something. Yeah, let’s traumatize our kids. No, let’s terrorize me because if that little bastard shows up in a different spot other than where I left him I’m burning down the damn house! I freak out a bit when I can’t find my keys and swear something moved them. Anyone remember that evil little Zuni fetish doll in the movie Trilogy of Terror? Yeah THAT evil effing thing that chased Karen Black around and attacked her. I just know that damn elf is the reincarnation of that crazy little shit. Waiting. Plotting. He’s as bad as a creepy clown.

Almost. Clowns suck too. And dolls. They also suck. Nope. Nope. Noppity Nope. Continue reading Buffalo Snow, Elf on a Shelf, Cocaine – All kinds of crazy stuff!
