It’s like the idiot cousin I need to take care of once in a while that gets me into all kinds of trouble. But I still love him. Even if it means jail time and restraining orders.
Hey, if we had a choice most would always pick Vegas over Atlantic City. Vegas is glitzy cheesy wacked out fun. AC is like it’s crazy family member you hide in the basement that reminds us of Chucky in the horror movies. Yet, Vegas for those living in the NYC area is thousands of miles away. AC is but a few hours by car or bus. You do the math. It’s much easier to do a quick weekend gambling party getaway and be back at work by Monday morning than flying out to Vegas and dealing with the hassle of travel. As those of you who follow my blog know I had been training to get back in shape to run in the Warrior Dash that occurred this past weekend in New Jersey. Well, I have to say that it was an absolute blast! It was probably the most fun I have had in a long time. Physically demanding, mentally taxing, and I totally loved it! By the time I was crossing the finish line I was banged up, tired, cut, scraped, and bruised. Yet, the feeling of victorious accomplishment had me fully exhilarated. Call me crazy but I wanted to do it again!
The Warrior Dash was everything I hoped it would be. I had read about these mud runs and they have become the hot new thing for those with an adventurous athletic fervor, and taste for something different from the typical fitness regimen. Talk about taking it to the next level! Even though I have been going to the gym for years, lifting weights and jogging the treadmill, I knew I had to prepare with more intensity to get ready for this. I added in actual running outside (and I usually hate running), along with a more advanced weight training plan and proper nutrition over the eight weeks leading up to the dash. Plus, it had been many years since I actually competed in an actual athletic event. I looked at the Warrior Dash as a way to coax my mind and my body back into the athletic arena, and get back into fit shape. I didn’t want to embarrass myself out there! Not too long ago I was able to experience my first pro soccer game, and even though I have never been a big fan, I was surprised at how much fun I had at the new Red Bull Arena. Who knew that I would enjoy watching sweaty men run around playing with balls?
Even though a few years old now the 25,000 seat arena itself is still shiny and new. Walking around you almost expect to suddenly breathe in that brand new car smell. Bathrooms are large and very clean. Concessions are everywhere. Also, there are many beer stands that feature “beers of the world” and other domestic brews. Why spend $9 on a Coors or Bud when you can get a Stiegl Lager, Stella, Red Stripe, Blue Moon, Landshark, Becks, Heineken, and Newcastle among others. Food is the basic hamburger, hot dog, chicken finger variety with a few stands around for tacos, nachos, and other specialty foods. French fries are quite tasty though and seasoned. Since soccer is such an international game you would think they would offer a bit more worldly delicacies than the standard stadium dreck fare, right? Continue reading Sweaty men playing with balls? Red Bull Arena in NJ!
I love cheesy. Always have, and the cheesier the better. There are an abundance of cheesy things to do in NYC but there is one that is just a bus ride away into the mystical land of New Jersey.
Not too long ago we actually did the most cheesy thing you can do in the tri-state area. Ridiculous amounts of beer, grog, giant souvenir glasses filled with frozen rum and vodka drinks, goofy flags, screaming for kill shots, eating with our fingers, falcons, the king and his court, jousting, sword fights, booing the bad guys, cheering the good guys, knights in fake battles to the death.
Yes kids, we went to Medieval Times!!!
