Kings Theatre in Brooklyn – a phoenix rising from the ashes.

o

Wow!

That’s the word that came to mind when we stepped in here last night to see the Whitesnake concert in this beautifully renovated theater.

The Kings Theatre is easy to get to from Manhattan by taking the Q subway to the Beverly Road station and walking a few minutes over. It was that simple.

I just could not fathom that this theater was closed for decades. They did a wonderful job bringing it back to its ornate glory. The thick dark woods, chandeliers, red velvet curtains, period furniture, images along the walls, the ceilings in the lobby and main theater, the regal architectural stylings, the amazing faces and carvings along the walls around the stage, and the old school marquee out front listing the night’s event were all breathtaking. There truly is so much to see here, especially if you are one who enjoys the grandiosity of old-school architecture, and a piece of Brooklyn that harkens to a bygone era of NYC entertainment. Heavy Metal Love with Judas Priest at the Barclay’s Center!

It is no secret that I am a big music fan. Especially the hard rocking, loud, heavy metal kind. I still attend many concerts and when I heard that Judas Priest was coming back to NYC for a stop on their Redeemer of Souls tour I just had to get tickets to party with one of my fav bands of all time. This was announced as a short tour of select cities to support their terrific new album, and considering back in 2011 they had pretty much announced that they were finished touring I was no way going to miss this. Being that they were going to perform at the still brand spanking new Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn it was a no brainer. Attain tickets at any cost. Jump on the subway and get ready to bang my head!

Judas Priest in concert! \m/ A spectacular show!!!

It was my first time at the Barclay’s Center. It still has the “new car look and smell” as it’s a fresh arena with terrific decor and amenities. Super easy to get to by subway and train as they all stop right in front of the place. Too bad the MTA sucks and it took us forever to get home that night as all the subways were delayed because of rail maintenance and whatnot. Still, that did not deter the heavy metal high I had after rocking out with the Metal Gods themselves. The Priest show had terrific sound, lighting, and effects. Great crowd too that were really into it. Rob Halford was in fine voice and still reigns as one of the legendary singers and frontmen of his generation. In fact, the whole band played with a controlled energized frenzy. From all the years playing together they are a tight and extremely talented unit. The addition of Richie Faulkner on guitar to replace the departed K.K. Downing seems to have added some youthful energy and is a terrific addition. There is nothing like the power and spectacle of a Judas Priest concert. The classic songs mixed in with the great new offerings, the pyrotechnics, the crowd singing along, and seeing Rob ride the Harley out onto the stage made for an amazing night of music. It never gets old. Continue reading Heavy Metal Love with Judas Priest at the Barclay’s Center!

So, did they start playing the Super Bowl yet?

wrf vwrfew

I’ll admit that I did not watch the Super Bowl. Nope, not one minute, not one play, not even a peek. You must all be asking how is that possible? Blasphemy! This is an American holiday now. How can you not watch? It’s the big game! The epicenter of all sports tv programming! The monster truck show climax of the NFL season! The big cheese! The big sombrero! For the whole enchilada! Ole’!

Hmmm…..I am suddenly craving some Mexican for lunch today. Tacos maybe? A burrito? I hope the bathroom at work will be empty later. Gonna be ugly. Wait….what was I talking about? Oh yeah, that football game that was played Sunday night. Get back on track Phil and stop getting veered off course by thoughts of delicious food. As I was saying it is a fact that I did not watch any of the Super Bowl this past Sunday, and honestly by seeing the final score and highlights (or lowlights if you’re a Broncos fan) I did not miss anything at all! This was an embarrassing abomination of a game. One of my friends said it best – “They should label the Broncos as the new Keystone Cops of the Super Bowl and play the old Benny Hill theme music over the highlights.” I do have to offer congrats to the Seattle Seahawks being crowned Super Bowl Champions as they totally destroyed Denver and left no doubt on that playing field. Yet, other than if you’re a Seahawks fan what joy is there of watching a boring non-competitive game of 43-8? After seeing the post-game updates on ESPN this game was literally over after the botched opening snap by Denver within the first 12 seconds! Spill some blood at Duff’s in Brooklyn NYC for a very metal good cause!

For those metalheads out there we believe there is nothing more metal than spilling blood for a good cause! \m/

I have written on this blog in the past about the importance of giving blood, and referenced my own experience donating blood after Hurricane Sandy. Jimmy Duff, the owner of Duff’s, knows how vital this is to help save lives and he supports this cause wholeheartedly. It’s a wonderful thing that he has done for the community going on five years now, and we thank him for that. Hopefully, this year’s drive will be a success with good participation. Also, you get to hang out at a cool bar listening to great metal tunes. It’s a win-win all around! I will be there rolling up my sleeve for sure!

The details – On Thursday, February 6th, Duff’s in Brooklyn NYC we’ll be hosting their 5th annual blood drive in conjunction with The New York Blood Center. The blood drive starts at 6:30PM so please try to get there early (the drive runs until 11 PM), and bring identification with photo or signature. All donors will be served complimentary refreshments and will receive a free Duff’s blood drive t-shirt (shirt image is above) that is custom designed for this year’s event. Also, it’s in blood red! How metal is that? Continue reading Spill some blood at Duff’s in Brooklyn NYC for a very metal good cause!
