Red Hook Bait & Tackle – a Hurricane Sandy Survivor

I love a good dive bar with all kinds of kitschy stuff on the walls!

This is one of those spots that you find now and then in the NYC area which makes you wish was closer to your apartment, but also glad that it’s far enough away from you. The temptation to lure me into here on a daily basis would be tough to resist. My liver would hate me, but man, would I be a happy camper here.

Red Hook Bait & Tackle is one of those places. It’s one of those bars that every New Yorker who appreciates a good dive should trek out to at least once. Plus, this bar was devastated by Hurricane Sandy along with many other businesses in the Red Hook area, so that makes it even more of a terrific pilgrimage to visit and support them. It’s a testament to the owners resolve, and the community who helped them get back on their feet. Continue reading Red Hook Bait & Tackle – a Hurricane Sandy Survivor

The Milton NYC – a new classy locals joint in Yorkville.

o (1)
Wonderful new bar in Yorkville NYC for a classy cocktail in a terrific setting. (yeah, it’s been a while since it opened but I have been lazy catching up on my reviews to write) I’m always looking for new spots to check out close to home and The Milton located around the corner from where I live is basically a stone’s throw away. Good thing it’s stumbling distance as they make a mean cocktail here!

Some quick observations –

Pleasant date spot. Good for brunch, light dinner, or after work drinks. Attentive service and friendly bartenders. The type of place to wind down with a libation after a long day at the bar area, or to take your special someone out for a tasty bite in the dining room or out front on the sidewalk seating when the weather cooperates.

A decent mix of craft type beers on tap, and a nifty cocktail list. They make a pretty decent spicy bloody mary here too. On our last visit our group of four had a few rounds of these. Many places make a mediocre bloody with the mix coming from a bottle pre-made and store bought. These we could tell were made from scratch, the correct way. Yum.

The menu consists of American, Irish and English influences. Weekend brunch served too. Quaint seating in the back dining area. Kind of a mix of Irish snug and British pub. Looks romantic too at night when the lights are dimmed, candles are lit all around, and flowers are on the table. Cozy, classy, but not stuffy at all.

Hey, clean bathrooms too! For the ladies, there are hooks under the bar top to hang bags and coats on. That is always something my gal appreciates. It’s the little details like this which raises my opinion of a place. Bonus! Continue reading The Milton NYC – a new classy locals joint in Yorkville.

Del Frisco’s in NYC. A sleek and sexy manly man meatfest.

o

Damn good filet mignon to go along with a wonderful sazerac cocktail. Classy boisterous joint to feed your inner carnivore. On my recent visit to this sleek and sexy haven of meat deliciousness and quality libations Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House in NYC did not disappoint.

Definitely a touch of fancy bulked up on testosterone in midtown that attracts a mix of tourists and locals alike. Even an occasional celebrity. Large sprawling restaurant with plenty of seating, thick dark woods, marble floors and stairs, high ceilings, and a huge bar anchoring this spot. Even on the rainy midweek late night that a friend brought me here the joint was jumping and amped up. Many people were still in business suits dining away on plates of meat while closing that deal or meeting up with their mistresses. Maybe even a paramour or two. Groups happily engaged in conversation. Women in designer dresses having a drink at the bar. The smell of finely cooked meat wafting through the air when brought about by a waiter. A lively manly man scene, but sexy enough to draw in plenty of ladies too. Continue reading Del Frisco’s in NYC. A sleek and sexy manly man meatfest.

The Fat Man strikes again!

After dinner not too long ago on the LES we decided to take a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood. My girl’s family actually grew up in this hood so we like to wander around and check out their old haunts. All of a sudden The Fat Man taps on my shoulder and points me in the direction of Veniero’s. Yes, I can’t resist so we decide to head on in.

Just had to wait on line for a few minutes for a table. When is there never a line here? At least you get to view the gigantic pastry counter with all its wonderful sugary offerings. All types of pastries, cookies, and gelato flavors. We were seated pretty quickly and handed the menus. There is so much stuff packed onto it that the actual letter size is super small to fit it all on the pages! Went with a regular coffee and trio of miniature pastries each. Hey, I’m trying to watch my figure as summer is just around the corner! I’m not fat – I’m just a bit oversized! Continue reading The Fat Man strikes again at Veniero’s in NYC!
