After three days of devourment on the Upper West Side of NYC it might be time to get my butt back in the gym and run non-stop on the treadmill. I am even scared to think about how many calories I ingested, while also doing some serious damage to my liver in the process. Yet, am I really complaining? Quite the contrary! This was three days of delicious consumption of some of what the best UWS restauranteurs in NYC had to offer. Of course, it was like eating my way around the world. A smorgasboard of gastronomic delirium as presented over a three night event called New Taste of the Upper West Side!
I was honored and humbled that my blog was considered to help promote and cover this fine event May 27 – May 30. As I put on my media pass each night it unlocked a world of eats and drinks all under one tent, and in a fabulous park setting, that is a must for any NYC food aficionado to attend and be a part of. It’s not too often that I wave the white flag and cry out “no mas” but after three days of enjoying so much terrific food, wine, beer, desserts, and cocktails I think I need to dry out and detox a bit. It was certainly something I won’t soon forget and I’m actually looking forward to next year’s party! Better start my diet now! Continue reading New Taste of the UWS. Three days of gastronomica in NYC!
Some pretty tasty mussels Provençal served up with decent frites and a cold Leffe Blonde to wash it down. Oh yeah! Nothing like an impromptu meal discovery. So many different types of dining spots here in NYC hidden down side streets that just turning a corner sometimes exposes one to an unforseen gastronomic delight!
BXL East is a very decent Belgian gastropub located in Midtown that we found after having a few drinks at an Irish pub close by. We walked in after making reservations along the way and were seated at a large table in the back room dining area. Nice menu of food items and beer choices. Plenty of mussels options to choose from with different broths and seasonings. I love Belgian beer, and their brews usually are on the heavier side with a hint of creamy maltiness and higher ABV (alcohol content) with many varieties to choose from. Plus, you can get quite a buzz just by drinking a few!
I found the prices and service to be very acceptable here. Yet, one of my biggest pet peeves are businesses that refuse to crank up the AC when it gets warm outside. This place had me sweating within minutes and it was a good thing they did get it cooled up in here as I was devouring a hot steamy pot of mussels. Seems they read my mind and turned up the AC. I did fully enjoy the meal as the mussels were plentiful, and the pot had a mix of tomatoes, herbs and garlic broth with some veggies mixed in to scoop up at the end, along with a bunch of mussels that had dropped out of their shells. Nothing was being left at the bottom of that pot! Continue reading Come flex your mussels at BXL East in NYC!
Holy gastronomica Batman! Family style gigantic portions for my huge appetite!
One of the few reasons to go anywhere near Times Square in NYC. If you are a real New Yorker you never really want to be in this part of town unless you’re there for a Broadway show or some sort of special event. As we were seeing Rock of Ages (awesome rocking show) not too long ago we decided to make reservations and eat here before the performance. Side note – sad to see the show bow to its final curtain. We saw it a few times and it was always a blast. Great music, plenty of laughs, wonderful memories, and a fun show to boot! Extra side note – never eat this much again if you plan on sitting in a small cramped Broadway theater to attend a show afterwards. I just wanted to lay down in the aisle and sleep after this carbo coma!
Carmine’s is known for ginormous family style portions, and they surely did not disappoint. The place itself is huge and boisterous. Plenty of pictures on the walls featuring Broadway celebrities and well knowns. Loud and full of people happily chowing down on some very decent plates of Italian style food. I would guess that 80% of the diners here that night were tourists. It probably is most of the time as it is located in tourist central, and many are in the area to either see a show or sight see. One thing for sure is that everyone comes here with an appetite and leaves satisfied. Continue reading Holy Gastronomica Batman! Carb Loading at Carmine’s in NYC!
Here we are at another Thanksgiving holiday. Travel nightmares. Family follies. Stuffing ourselves to the point of gastronomic failure. Waistlines pushing maximum expansion. Then usually passing out on the couch for a while in a tryptophanic turkey coma until the aroma of fresh coffee and pumpkin pie is in the air. Hey now, no matter how full we are there’s always room for dessert! Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays mainly because I get to feast and engorge myself on delicious food prepared by relatives who can cook their asses off. No Shake N Bake chicken here, just real down home comfort food and stuffing galore. I will admit to a guilty pleasure during this meal – canned cranberry sauce! I can’t help myself, as I love it. The shape of the can it plops out as. You can slice it. It’s gelatinous wiggle. It’s not as sour as fresh cranberry sauce. Drool.
Hey, don’t judge me! We all have our shameful little fetishes. Continue reading It’s Thanksgiving in NYC. Turkey time! Come at me bro!
