There are those days when I just don’t feel like eating all healthy and nutritious. We have all had those days. When you just can’t eat another salad or baked fish plate. You’d almost rather eat a bowl of dirt with ice cream and chocolate syrup on it. I had one of those days recently where I threw the calorie counts out the window, and decided to go have a fun meal nearby at the newly opened Duke’s on the UES of NYC.
Walking in we were greeted by the friendly hostess and were offered any seat we wanted that were available. As it was early on a weekday the place was mostly empty. Took a seat at a booth and were quickly taken care of by a terrific waitress. She made some perfect recommendations for food and drinks and answered any question we had about the menu and specials.
My observations –
Cool 70’s/80’s pop and rock playing.
Fun roadhouse decor.
Flat screens everywhere. Must be a good football weekend spot.
Plenty of cocktail concoctions. Boozy Gummy Bears!
Happy hour half prices on select libations and appetizers.
With so many specialty cuisine spots opening up here in NYC lately it can be a bit dizzying to the average dining patron. With an exploding scene of gastropubs, craft beer joints, cocktail-centric spots, and terrific dining options there is no shortage of new places to discover. So much wonderful food and drink that having a gym membership is almost a requirement just to burn off all the extra delicious calories! One such spot that I am overdue in writing about here is Jacob’s Pickles on the Upper West Side. What’s not to like about this place? Sure, it’s a touch of Brooklyn hipster central located uptown on the UWS, but damn son, Jacob’s Honey Chicken and Pickles are da shizz!
If you have a hankering for good old-fashioned stick to your ribs comfort food then head on in and be sure to loosen up the belt or jeans top button. Always start with their freshly baked fluffy but dense biscuits & fixin’s that comes with house strawberry & orange preserves, clover honey, and organic butter. This in itself is a meal but just a warm-up for the gluttony to come. Oh yes, the honey chicken & pickles buttermilk fried chicken. Oh. Mah. Gawd! What you receive on your plate is a deceivingly fulling portion of finger licking good crispy buttermilk fried chicken slathered with clover honey and hot sour pickles. If they only offered a nap room with hammocks in the back after eating this. Zzzzzz……… Continue reading Oh My! Fried Chicken & Pickles at Jacob’s Pickles NYC!→
Deep in the Louisiana Bayou hidden far back in the swampland lies this outpost of genial southern hospitality. Night had fallen. Dark and mysterious we entered inside to find a voo-doo laden establishment of flickering candles and dark woods illuminated by the flames of a roaring fireplace. The sounds of soothing music was playing in the backround amongst the chatter of fellow imbibers. In the backwoods of Manhattan we had stumbled upon the mysterious and welcoming Ninth Ward.
We took a table in a corner overlooking the bar. Big heavy wooden chairs and tables added to the charm of this place. We proceeded to check out the menu. Braised beef on toast, which was only $2.50 each and the suggestion was to order two. Done. Fried pickles? Of course! Both were delicious, but I was still a bit hungry. Had to try the gumbo as it is one of my faves. Their gumbo was thick, spicy, and filling. Well worth the $7 for this bowl of happiness.
