One of the things that most men dread, and some women too, its shopping for clothes. It’s a necessary evil, and one that I do not like at all anymore. I actually did not mind hitting the shops to pick up some gear for my bod back in the past. I was a bit of a clothes whore. That was when things actually fit me the right way. Before my body changed a bit. Before I moved into NYC and caught the foodie bug and became a gluttonous beast. I mean, let’s get real here, one of the reasons so many of us live in a cosmopolitan fantasyland like the city I reside in is that fact that there is pretty much every fattening and delicious food on the planet here. Amazing restaurants. Ethnic diversity of meals. Food stands on almost every corner. Food trucks parked on the streets. Temptation is everywhere. Everything freaking delivers! Massive Gastronomica! Sometimes I like to dine alone. Not that I don’t have anyone to eat with and not because I hate people. Well, sometimes I do. Depends on the actions and the people involved. It’s just that sometimes in a city of 8.3 million people I enjoy a moment of solitude away from it all. There are times when I just want to grab a newspaper, read what’s going on in the world, and not converse with anyone. I like to hideaway in one of the local diners with a cup of joe where no one will bother me other than to take my order. I find eating alone almost therapeutic and relaxing. No pressure to babble on about mundane daily things or to partake in any chit chat. Just me, my coffee, my meal, and the paper. That’s all the companionship I need when the feeling to be along hits me. Now, don’t get me wrong as I love being around my friends and loved ones when eating out or going to a bar, but when you are surrounded my millions of people each and every day there comes a time when you just want to be alone for a bit. I have always been a very independent person and been on my lonesome many times throughout my life so having a bite to eat by myself is no big deal. It’s funny the reactions I receive when I tell people this. From shock to amusement. Some feel the same as I do, and there are others who freak out when it comes to dining alone. So many people I speak to have the same fear of going out to a restaurant by themselves as to speaking in public. I don’t understand what the big deal is. Bring something to read or a small laptop to use. Many places have free wifi nowadays. Pass the time while noshing away and surfing the net. Just turn down the volume if watching porn. Most people seem to get a bit weirded out by the creepy dude with all the sex noises coming from his table. Continue reading Eating alone with my meandering thoughts in NYC
It’s one of those days when I woke up to a head cold and feel like crapola. I just want to drink a bottle of Nyquil and crawl back under the covers and go to sleep for three days. Since I have very little tolerance for the stuff anyway usually a full cap full will do the trick. Alas, since I am going away on vacation this Friday to see the parental units in Florida I need to be at work and get a lot accomplished before I head out on my favorite US airline – JetBlue. Gotta have my snacks and in-flight TV! Plus, I need to be rested and well for a trip to the Disney Parks. When you have mom and dad with you for five days in DisneyWorld things can get a bit crazed and nerves can be frayed. Those of you out there who deal with cray cray parents on a daily basis know what I mean. At least Epcot has the Wine & Beer Expo going on, so that will be one afternoon I will be intoxicated and numb to all around me! Hey Mom – you’re driving! Me and Dad are getting crunk!
Anyhoo, in honor of my stuffed nose and achy head I think it’s time for a bit of ranting and raving. Just going to work today I noticed some things that put me in a more foul mood than this cold already has me in. It’s one of those days when I just want to “smack someone upside the head” observing some of the things I see people do that annoy me in NYC. Continue reading One day I’m gonna smack someone upside the head in NYC!
Wandering around the Revel this past weekend we were trying to decide on which place to eat but many had a long wait. When we saw Village Whiskey we decided to give it a shot and were seated immediately. So glad we did as this place rocks!
Loved the atmosphere as the design and decor reminds one of a speakeasy as it’s dimly lit, retro-Edison lighting, subway tiled walls, worn looking mirrors, and there was even old time music playing when we entered (even though it switched to modern rock and pop later on). Even though not overly spacious there is plenty of booth seating for large groups and single tables for couples. Large candle lit bar area. You can tell some solid thought was put into designing this place. Also, we were seated across the open kitchen and it was cool to watch the chefs at work. Every plate looked wonderful that was put up. Continue reading Village Whiskey – Iron Chef Jose Garces Does It Right!
