This terrific NYC cocktail joint made me say – Attaboy!

Even this beer guzzler of a dude can enjoy a libation made from the finest ingredients now and then. The boozier the better I say. Living well is so choice.

Attaboy NYC! I could not believe that it had taken me this long to partake in the wonder of a liquid refreshment at this establishment. A good friend of mine asked me to accompany him on a bro-date and embellish in an evening of cocktails, conversation, carousing, and devious behavior. Who am I to decline an invite of such stupendous possibilities?

I have a soft spot for Speakeasies, as they take me back to a more civilized time of NYC history. When gentleman had manners, broke the law, and drank in secret during the idiotic Prohibition years, while keeping it all hush-hush. Honor among thieves for sure. The Milton NYC – a new classy locals joint in Yorkville.

Wonderful new bar in Yorkville NYC for a classy cocktail in a terrific setting. (yeah, it’s been a while since it opened but I have been lazy catching up on my reviews to write) I’m always looking for new spots to check out close to home and The Milton located around the corner from where I live is basically a stone’s throw away. Good thing it’s stumbling distance as they make a mean cocktail here!

Some quick observations –

Pleasant date spot. Good for brunch, light dinner, or after work drinks. Attentive service and friendly bartenders. The type of place to wind down with a libation after a long day at the bar area, or to take your special someone out for a tasty bite in the dining room or out front on the sidewalk seating when the weather cooperates.

A decent mix of craft type beers on tap, and a nifty cocktail list. They make a pretty decent spicy bloody mary here too. On our last visit our group of four had a few rounds of these. Many places make a mediocre bloody with the mix coming from a bottle pre-made and store bought. These we could tell were made from scratch, the correct way. Yum.

The menu consists of American, Irish and English influences. Weekend brunch served too. Quaint seating in the back dining area. Kind of a mix of Irish snug and British pub. Looks romantic too at night when the lights are dimmed, candles are lit all around, and flowers are on the table. Cozy, classy, but not stuffy at all.

Hey, clean bathrooms too! For the ladies, there are hooks under the bar top to hang bags and coats on. That is always something my gal appreciates. It’s the little details like this which raises my opinion of a place. Bonus! Continue reading The Milton NYC – a new classy locals joint in Yorkville.

The Gilroy – a touch of craft cocktail class on the UES!

The Gilroy. Just the name of this fine cocktail establishment harkens back to the days of the roaring 20’s and pre-prohibition era libations. Not only does this new craft cocktail emporium on the Upper East Side/Yorkville serve a quality drink, but it also offers up some mighty fine gastropub fare! As the reinvention of this part of Manhattan in NYC is taking place lately new businesses such as The Gilroy are helping to usher in a new era.

After a few visits here so far I can righfully proclaim that I am a big fan of The Gilroy. It’s hard not to enjoy yourself here when you are surrounded by a wonderful staff making sure your visit is to your liking with terrific food and friendly service. The first evening we wandered in and took a seat in the cozy back room dining area. The decor features a warm and candlelit atmosphere, seating in the back room, hanging Edison style lighting, a stylish wooden communal table in the middle up front, fun background music, and a nifty looking copper top bar by the entrance. Well thought out to fit the space they had to work with and put together in a classy but inviting way. It’s definitely a step above the normal fratty pubs and sports bars that line Second Avenue where it resides. A perfect spot to being a date, or converse with a few friends late at night in the dim light over cocktails and a bite to eat. Spring weather, bar crawls, and getting drunk in NYC!

It’s the inevitable changing of the guard here in NYC when the seasons change and the citizens of this fair city seems to go berzerk. Including myself. Maybe it’s because we all go cabin fever crazy after the long Winters here. As the first warm sunny days of Spring finally arrive we get all giddy with anticipation. Outdoor seating along all the restaurants on the avenues magically appear. Daylight savings time hits and we have longer hours of sun. The bars and restos open up the front windows letting in an al fresco dining and drinking environment. People are happy and overjoyed to finally be outside. Seems as if all the bars are doing hopping business. In my little part of the world on the Upper East Side of NYC where I reside in Yorkville there has been a slow transformation happening. Normally, this part of town has been more affordable to live in, but also had a stigma of being on the “older grandma and granpa” side with a mix of “old money folks” and “frat boy and sorostitute” bar scene mixed in. Wow – has that seemingly changed overnight as this area has been revitalized with a mix of terrific craft beer and cocktail bars, along with a big time food scene. Sure, it will never be the Lower East Side, Meatpacking District, or Village nightlife destination, but hot damn I don’t have to go downtown to get absolutely blotto anymore along with stuffing myself into a food coma!

Holy crap was I drunk on Sunday! Black. Out. Drunk.
