I’m on Vacation! Pina Coladas, Island Hopping, Off The Grid!

I’m on vacation! Hand me a frozen cocktail and don’t be stingy with the rum!

Finally going on a real vacation out of the country for a week. Heading out on a Caribbean cruise with my gal and parents. Dad likes to drink and mom likes to gamble. We all love to eat. On a cruise ship that is a winning, if deadly, combination. Drinking, eating, gambling, island hopping and shopping. I think I might experience almost all of the Seven Deadly Sins over these seven days. We’ll make the most of it though I’m sure and have some great fun. I just need to keep in mind a list of things to adhere to that will help make my vacation time more enjoyable. Lord knows spending the week with the parental units will cause some stress to begin with.

1. I will not be on social networks of any kind as soon as that cruise ship pulls away from the port. It’s called a vacation for a reason! I am totally disconnecting for a week. Off the grid. Incommunicado. Lost in space. See ya!

2. I will not be posting vacation pictures on Facebook, Instagram, Yelp, Twitter, Snapchat, Tinder, LinkedIn, Clown Sex Weekly, or any other internet site. I will not be one of  “those” people who feel the need to post a million pictures of everywhere they go every minute of their vacations on social media. It’s almost as if people forgot how to actually kick back and enjoy the destinations and sights they experience. They just run around looking for photo ops to quickly post and show off to their friends and followers. Dozens of pictures. Hundreds of them. Thousands. Honestly, none of us really care. Just stop already. Go have fun, enjoy, and download the pics when you get back. We’ll see them later on. Continue reading I’m on Vacation! Pina Coladas, Island Hopping, Off The Grid!

Dress up a bit. Be a tad classy and leave the jeans, sneakers, sandals, and t-shirt for the local pub. Act like an adult and adhere to the dress code. It’s fun to play dress up once in a while. Especially when visiting a spot to partake in cocktails from another era.

Find the exit doors in Grand Central Station on the upper restaurant balcony area. It’s kind of hidden but really not that much of a secret. The Campbell Apartment is listed right above it. Make a left out of them and you’ll see the entrance right off the outside bar/patio area on the Vanderbilt Ave side.

Saunter up to the bar and order a Kentucky Ginger. Watch as the bartender mixes a perfect libation. While he is doing that look over the drink menu and marvel at the list of old-school cocktails that are offered here. Be aware that the room was originally from the 1920’s and has been restored to its former glory. It displays history.

Act all cool like James Bond and take it all in. Lean back against the bar and marvel at the amazing ceiling architecture. Look around at the well dressed crowd enjoying themselves while prohibition era classics and cool jazz play in the background. Limited seating and even on a late evening midweek the joint was jumping. Enjoy the view of those sitting on the balcony area engaging in a little voyeurism of their own. Old school ambiance oozes out of every pore here from the white-jacketed servers, to the black cocktail dressed hostesses adorned with pearl necklaces. Do you like fancy?

Do you like sexy?

Do you like opulence?

Do you like seriously quality made drinks with a lot of booze in them?

Then head on over to The Back Room at One57. It’s located inside the sleek new Park Hyatt Hotel in midtown Manhattan NYC. The lobby host greets with a smile and directs you to take the elevator up to the 3rd floor restaurant. As the doors part you walk into a room of high ceilings and luxury surroundings. Think marble, glass, couches, and refined ambiance. The kind of spot where the men are smartly dressed in suit and tie, and the ladies in designer dress wear.

We sat at the bar on this night and had a wonderful experience. The staff here is highly professional, and offers exemplary service. Great bartenders that will partake in polite conversation and attend to your needs. If you chat them up and get to know them a bit they are actually friendly guys. Plus, they make a mean cocktail. Always a plus! Continue reading Check into the Back Room at One57 for some NYC opulence.

New Taste of the UWS. Three days of gastronomica in NYC!

new

After three days of devourment on the Upper West Side of NYC it might be time to get my butt back in the gym and run non-stop on the treadmill. I am even scared to think about how many calories I ingested, while also doing some serious damage to my liver in the process. Yet, am I really complaining? Quite the contrary! This was three days of delicious consumption of some of what the best UWS restauranteurs in NYC had to offer. Of course, it was like eating my way around the world. A smorgasboard of gastronomic delirium as presented over a three night event called New Taste of the Upper West Side!

I was honored and humbled that my blog was considered to help promote and cover this fine event May 27 – May 30. As I put on my media pass each night it unlocked a world of eats and drinks all under one tent, and in a fabulous park setting, that is a must for any NYC food aficionado to attend and be a part of. It’s not too often that I wave the white flag and cry out “no mas” but after three days of enjoying so much terrific food, wine, beer, desserts, and cocktails I think I need to dry out and detox a bit. It was certainly something I won’t soon forget and I’m actually looking forward to next year’s party! Better start my diet now! Continue reading New Taste of the UWS.
