Even this beer guzzler of a dude can enjoy a libation made from the finest ingredients now and then. The boozier the better I say. Living well is so choice.
Attaboy NYC! I could not believe that it had taken me this long to partake in the wonder of a liquid refreshment at this establishment. A good friend of mine asked me to accompany him on a bro-date and embellish in an evening of cocktails, conversation, carousing, and devious behavior. Who am I to decline an invite of such stupendous possibilities?
Gotta love a speakeasy happy hour 4-6 pm Mon-Fri! $10 cocktails, smooth music and some old school flapper era jazz to set the mood. Terrific atmosphere and dimly lit ambiance. Such was the wonderful tone set here at the Flatiron Lounge in NYC.
The Maple Leaf is a nice choice if in a rye whiskey mood, and it goes down nice and easy. I walked in around 5:30 and ordered my first. Didn’t take much to twist my arm and order up a second a minute before happy hour ended. Some libations are worth hanging around for.
Superior bartenders, quality cocktails, and a classy throwback decor make this a must visit if shopping in the area and need some liquid relaxation after dropping cash on some retail therapy. I so needed this in my life at that point, as I was a pressure cooker about to explode after dealing with way too many annoying tourists crowding the stores getting in my way, along with the locals dragging crying kids and baby carriages along the sidewalks. There is nothing that satisfies my soul more than a delicious cold craft beer on a warm summer day in NYC. In all the years I have lived in my neighborhood we have been saddled by an overabundance of fratty bars and pubs that sling the all too familiar menu of bland flavorless mass-produced and over commercialized brew that we see in print and TV ads everywhere.
Alas, to my delight, and to many others who feel that yellow water called “light beer” is akin to heresy, over these past three years or so a beer bar resurgence arrived in the area to save our taste buds. With the 2nd Ave subway line almost finished many new businesses are coming. One of those bars that has taken up a home here is The Supply House. It’s another terrific craft beer purveyor that took a chance with Yorkville on the Upper East Side. This one in the spot at which the horrible frat boy and sorostitute haunt Tin Lizzy used to be. Not many in the hood liked that place, and it really had no reason to be in this part of town. Years ago it started out ok, but later developed into a bad scene. Good riddance as that bar was a cesspool and total vomitorium. It just attracted a less than stellar crowd. On the flip side, the new tenants in this spot are doing it right, and I wish them a lot of success. The diverse crowd I have seen here also seems to approve. Whoa! Packed at 10:30 on a Sunday night and only one tiny bathroom for all. Hold it in and get another cocktail! Such is the life at Employees Only. This NYC speakeasy has been on my “must visit” list for quite some time now. As a lover of these haunts I knew it was a matter of time before I found myself over here enjoying a libation or two. As these kinds of joints go it is a “high quality” venue and a wonderful example of what this type of bar should be. It’s really not that hard to find as you need to keep an eye open for the clues. Look for the Speakeasyish faux front with the neon psychic sign in the window. A few of us came here recently after our Yelp Holiday Hangover Hornblower booze cruise event for a nightcap. Be respectful to the doorman and show ID’s. He seems like a nice chap anyway. When passing through the entrance and parting the heavy drapes it’s quite an eclectic scene one is exposed to in here with a variety of patrons along the bar, standing along the walls, at tables, with all enjoying the ambiance. Dimly lit, great decor, and cool tunes playing it’s a scene of controlled raucous. I instantly knew I would love this place.
