This past weekend featured a personal accomplishment for me as I just completed my 21st official 5K race!
Man, I have come a long way since last March when I ran in my first 5K. Sure, I did a few obstacle course/mud run events in the past but those were one-time deals. I would train a while for them then go back to normal afterwards. When one is competing in this many race events a frequent schedule of running and training is required. It’s a necessity and really helped as I hit some PR’s, and ran one of my fastest 5K times yet on a warm sunny Sunday morning at Coney Island.
In fact, this month I participated in two running events that I was proud to be a part of. A few weekends ago I ran in the Brooklyn Pride 5K along with this weekend’s Coney Island 5K. Both runs were very organized and a pleasure to be associated with. Each gave out terrific finisher medals, with rainbow ribbons to hang around your neck as you crossed the finish line, along with extra swag such as dri-fit shirts and rainbow number bibs. Both races were terrific in supporting the LGBT community and Pride Month. I had a blast at each and was honored to be involved with both. Both my gal and I have seen many Cirque Du Soleil shows over the years and I can undeniably say that I am a big fan. So when we were offered the chance to attend the premier night event and afterparty of course we jumped at the opportunity as we had not seen Amaluna before. We knew we were in for a special evening for as soon as we stepped inside the big top tent were were greeted by servers in costume handing us glasses of champagne. Yes, please! Sure, I’ll have three or four of those. There was a terrific mix of people in attendence to see the show and everyone mingled among the exhibits, performers, and interactive showcases for the hour before showtime. There was a feeling of excitement in the air, and as we were led into the main seating area surrounding the stage everyone was taken in by the colors and sounds our senses were treated to.

Not too long ago I was one of the lucky few who scored tickets to Yelp Night at Zarkana and enjoyed the event immensely!
Now, I have seen many Cirque du Soleil shows from NY to Vegas to Orlando, and even though I thought this was a notch below the performance and story levels of the others it is still a spectacle to behold.
The amazing athleticism, balance, timing, and strength that the performers utilize in each act is sometimes breathtaking, and very hard to fathom even trying any of it myself. Even though I work out and am pretty fit these professionals just blow me away. The trapeze artists, feats of strength, acrobats, jugglers, etc, all put on a show of skill with nerves of steel. I would be a mess if I tried any of it! Call the ambulance!

As those of you who follow my blog know I had been training to get back in shape to run in the Warrior Dash that occurred this past weekend in New Jersey. Well, I have to say that it was an absolute blast! It was probably the most fun I have had in a long time. Physically demanding, mentally taxing, and I totally loved it! By the time I was crossing the finish line I was banged up, tired, cut, scraped, and bruised. Yet, the feeling of victorious accomplishment had me fully exhilarated. Call me crazy but I wanted to do it again!
The Warrior Dash was everything I hoped it would be. I had read about these mud runs and they have become the hot new thing for those with an adventurous athletic fervor, and taste for something different from the typical fitness regimen. Talk about taking it to the next level! Even though I have been going to the gym for years, lifting weights and jogging the treadmill, I knew I had to prepare with more intensity to get ready for this. I added in actual running outside (and I usually hate running), along with a more advanced weight training plan and proper nutrition over the eight weeks leading up to the dash. Plus, it had been many years since I actually competed in an actual athletic event. I looked at the Warrior Dash as a way to coax my mind and my body back into the athletic arena, and get back into fit shape. I didn’t want to embarrass myself out there!
