Bartender, an Ommegang Rare Vos please. What? I said, an OMMEGANG RARE VOS PLEASE. Speak up, what? OMMEGANG RARE VOS!!!! Holy crap is this place loud! WHAT?
Spitzer’s Corner in NYC is that kind of place that somehow everyone knows about, and they are all there at the same time it seems whenever you go there. We went here on a recent Saturday night and it was packed – and loud! Sound bounces off of everywhere as the acoustics are horrible. My ears are still ringing almost a week later. Even so, I like this place as it has a cool communal vibe to it, and the food is pretty decent for a gastropub.
The biggest draw to me is the 40 or so craft beers on tap. That’s correct – 40 CRAFT STYLE BEERS ON TAP – Woo Hoo! Plus, there are another 20 or so in bottles. Belgium, Lambics, Pilsners, IPA, Wheats, Stouts, you name it. For the love of all things sacred don’t order a crappy Budwieser here as there are so many great beers to choose from!
Food is decent if a bit on the pricey side. The smoked bacon kobe sliders are awesome! I could eat ten of these easy! Mac and cheese bars take a sideways spin on the conventional comfort food staple. Bowl of meatballs on a bed of salsa and bread stuffing is a tasty delight. The fat fries are filling, salty, with rosemary seasoning, and come in a metal bowl to contain the carbohydrate goodness. This night we only wanted to try a bunch of appetizers and they did not disappoint.
Seating is basically a communal affair with long tables surrounded by chairs on all sides. Be prepared to sit next to strangers. Bar is so crowded at times it is hard to get to, but most people were cool and let you get by to yell out your order. It gets incredibly loud here when crowded so speak up. ID is checked at door and your wrist is stamped to prove that you are of legal age. Bartenders will ask to see yours and everyone in your party’s stamps. I guess they are really wary of underage drinking which I can understand as in the neighborhood there are a lot of bars and partying going on. This place is very popular and they don’t want to lose their liquor license, which would be a shame with all the great beers they serve up!
Overall, Spitzer’s Corner is a fun place but can get a bit overbearing with the crowds and loudness. Go for the beer, but leave before the bridge and tunnel crowd gets in around midnight.
Pro Tip – if you can score a counter seat along the front window it offers a great people watching perch. You see some really funny and crazy things walking by!
