Enjoying a Slice of NYC Heaven at Bluestone Lane

The Avocado Smash!

Then as the skies opened, and the rain subsided, the Lord said “let there be light”!

Such was the weather recently when I was nearing the end of a rainy 5 mile run in Central Park. As I finished my run on the east side of the park and headed for cover I jogged over to Bluestone Lane, which is housed in a church off East 90th and Central Park on the Upper East Side of NYC.

As the sun came back out I plopped down into a sidewalk table. It’s really a nice spot to grab an iced coffee and bite to eat. Continue reading Enjoying a Slice of NYC Heaven at Bluestone Lane

Ray’s Candy Store – a NYC Old School Classic

The man himself – Ray. (photo credit – Ray’s Candy Store)

Gritty. Cheap. Cramped. A bit worn and grimy. Love.

Ray’s Candy Store is just perfect and a true representation of what old school NYC used to be. The kind of place that is a must to hit up when in a happy drunk vibe late at night, and need some sort of fatty, sweet, greasy, or messy snack to help soak up all the booze you consumed.

Ray’s has been open since 1974. Walking up from outside the facade is not the most appealing, and easy to miss. It’s a different world once you enter inside. The space itself is small, and the walls are plastered with newspaper clipping, photos, signs, pictures, and posters listing the hodge podge of foods they offer. Soft serve ice cream, Belgian fries, egg creams, chili dogs, cheese fries, shakes, fried Twinkies, sausages, and even beignets! There is so much here to make your inner fatty happy! Red Hook Bait & Tackle – a Hurricane Sandy Survivor

I love a good dive bar with all kinds of kitschy stuff on the walls!

This is one of those spots that you find now and then in the NYC area which makes you wish was closer to your apartment, but also glad that it’s far enough away from you. The temptation to lure me into here on a daily basis would be tough to resist. My liver would hate me, but man, would I be a happy camper here.

Red Hook Bait & Tackle is one of those places. It’s one of those bars that every New Yorker who appreciates a good dive should trek out to at least once. Plus, this bar was devastated by Hurricane Sandy along with many other businesses in the Red Hook area, so that makes it even more of a terrific pilgrimage to visit and support them. It’s a testament to the owners resolve, and the community who helped them get back on their feet. Continue reading Red Hook Bait & Tackle – a Hurricane Sandy Survivor

Cupcakes and Wine at Sweet Revenge in NYC

Cupcakes and wine? Sure, deal me in! After all, living well is Sweet Revenge, and since this was the name of the place in NYC it’s kind of appropriate.

We were on a cheat day when it came to eating, and after dinner close by decided to check this place out as we were still in time for cupcake and wine happy hour. Yes, that really is a thing here. Oh boy!

It was absolutely empty when we arrived. Service was pleasant but not overly attentive. Just right as we wanted to relax and chat. Small location with some seating and a small bar area. Continue reading Cupcakes and Wine at Sweet Revenge in NYC
