Why are you doing this? Why are you putting your body through this?
I get asked these questions quite frequently when people hear that I am constantly hitting the weights in the gym, or out running three to five miles a night to get ready to participate in a Tough Mudder on July 12. Honestly, there are times when I really don’t know why. Not sure what motivates me but I keep on doing it. I’m well past my younger days of athletics and when my body could recuperate much quicker from the muscle soreness, aches, and pains I incurred after training. I guess it’s that I refuse to give up. It’s very easy to give up. I know many people that just let it all go when hitting a certain age and give in to life’s excesses. Even though my body might have a bit of wear and tear on it after all these years something keeps me going. Something just won’t let me quit. Even when I have days lately when I doubt I can do this, and my mind plays games with my confidence, my heart and soul won’t let me give up. It refuses. There is a nagging voice in the back of my mind that urges me to keep going. Even when I’d rather be out bar hopping with friends, hitting a party, or going out to a gut busting dinner. Failure is not an option.
Why am I doing this to myself? Continue reading Why the heck am I putting myself through this?
Vegas baby, Vegas! We meet again. Oh how I love thee you dirty bitch!
Being that I am once again in Las Vegas attenting another convention for work I figured I’d give a shout out to my favorite place to work and play.
This pretty much sums it up every time I step off that airplane at McCarran Airport. For a few days or a week you can live like a rock star and party like a porn star. It’s an adult playground and fantasy land like none other. You can live out the seven deadly sins while here, and sometimes invent a few new ones! Sometimes I like to dine alone. Not that I don’t have anyone to eat with and not because I hate people. Well, sometimes I do. Depends on the actions and the people involved. It’s just that sometimes in a city of 8.3 million people I enjoy a moment of solitude away from it all. There are times when I just want to grab a newspaper, read what’s going on in the world, and not converse with anyone. I like to hideaway in one of the local diners with a cup of joe where no one will bother me other than to take my order. I find eating alone almost therapeutic and relaxing. No pressure to babble on about mundane daily things or to partake in any chit chat. Just me, my coffee, my meal, and the paper. That’s all the companionship I need when the feeling to be along hits me. Now, don’t get me wrong as I love being around my friends and loved ones when eating out or going to a bar, but when you are surrounded my millions of people each and every day there comes a time when you just want to be alone for a bit. I have always been a very independent person and been on my lonesome many times throughout my life so having a bite to eat by myself is no big deal. It’s funny the reactions I receive when I tell people this. From shock to amusement. Some feel the same as I do, and there are others who freak out when it comes to dining alone. So many people I speak to have the same fear of going out to a restaurant by themselves as to speaking in public. I don’t understand what the big deal is. Bring something to read or a small laptop to use. Many places have free wifi nowadays. Pass the time while noshing away and surfing the net. Just turn down the volume if watching porn. Most people seem to get a bit weirded out by the creepy dude with all the sex noises coming from his table. Continue reading Eating alone with my meandering thoughts in NYC
I’ll admit that I did not watch the Super Bowl. Nope, not one minute, not one play, not even a peek. You must all be asking how is that possible? Blasphemy! This is an American holiday now. How can you not watch? It’s the big game! The epicenter of all sports tv programming! The monster truck show climax of the NFL season! The big cheese! The big sombrero! For the whole enchilada! Ole’!
Hmmm…..I am suddenly craving some Mexican for lunch today. Tacos maybe? A burrito? I hope the bathroom at work will be empty later. Gonna be ugly. Wait….what was I talking about? Oh yeah, that football game that was played Sunday night. Get back on track Phil and stop getting veered off course by thoughts of delicious food. As I was saying it is a fact that I did not watch any of the Super Bowl this past Sunday, and honestly by seeing the final score and highlights (or lowlights if you’re a Broncos fan) I did not miss anything at all! This was an embarrassing abomination of a game. One of my friends said it best – “They should label the Broncos as the new Keystone Cops of the Super Bowl and play the old Benny Hill theme music over the highlights.” I do have to offer congrats to the Seattle Seahawks being crowned Super Bowl Champions as they totally destroyed Denver and left no doubt on that playing field. Yet, other than if you’re a Seahawks fan what joy is there of watching a boring non-competitive game of 43-8? After seeing the post-game updates on ESPN this game was literally over after the botched opening snap by Denver within the first 12 seconds!
