It’s already starting. The influx of New Years resolution noobs are starting to trickle into the gyms across the nation. Well, at least they are here in my gym in NYC. Even though it was a dreary Sunday afternoon and not many people were in there today working out there were more than enough newbies to keep me entertained. It just amazes me what I see, and after all these years going to the gym I am still shocked at some of the stupidity I observe. I know that after the holiday abuse we put our bodies through with all the bad eating and drinking that many look to the long cold doldrum days of winter to try and get back in shape for the Spring and Summer. The problem is many of these gym novices have no clue what they are doing, and get in the regular gym members’ way. That, and they also endanger themselves! Stay away from me noob! I have officially signed up to enter Tough Mudder on July 12th in Andover, NY. Yup, I’m putting my body on the line again for a terrific cause. I’m taking on Tough Mudder to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. Serious running, gym sessions, training, and conditioning is starting this week. 10-12 miles and over 20-25 military style obstacles encompass this event so I better get in shape. Now, I know what people are thinking. It’s the holiday season coming up. There will be all types of evilly delicious bad foods and sugary delicacies all around and ready to ambush me at every turn. Dude, half your blog is food porn! Actually, for me it’s the perfect time as it will offer a good reason to not be lured into all the bad eating and drinking. I am sure I will be enticed along the way and succumb a bit. I am a sucker for seduction! Thanksgiving and vacations are coming up. Hey, I still have to enjoy life you know!

Recently I had the pleasure of being invited to a pre-grand opening night at the new Bottomzup Bar and Grill located in the Murray Hill/Kips Bay area of Manhattan. Being that this part of town is also known as “Bro Hill” because of all the frat bars in the area I did not know what to think of another bar opening up along 3rd Avenue in the 20’s. Well, when I walked in my mind was blown! All I could see were flat screens as far as the eye could see. 45 sixty inch flat screens! Stadium-like sound system. Photos and pictures of famous athletes, teams, and sports shots placed floor to ceiling. A sushi and raw bar. In a sports bar! Full bar area with their own specialty cocktails, drink specials, and plenty of seating. 14 beers on tap and even more in bottles. Super friendly and attentive staff. No matter where you sat there was a birds eye view of any game you wanted to see. This is the ultimate football and sports watchers bar!
As a guy that has followed New York sports my whole life, and as a sports fan in general, I can truly appreciate the attention to detail and planning that went into a bar such as this. As those of you who follow my blog know I had been training to get back in shape to run in the Warrior Dash that occurred this past weekend in New Jersey. Well, I have to say that it was an absolute blast! It was probably the most fun I have had in a long time. Physically demanding, mentally taxing, and I totally loved it! By the time I was crossing the finish line I was banged up, tired, cut, scraped, and bruised. Yet, the feeling of victorious accomplishment had me fully exhilarated. Call me crazy but I wanted to do it again!
The Warrior Dash was everything I hoped it would be. I had read about these mud runs and they have become the hot new thing for those with an adventurous athletic fervor, and taste for something different from the typical fitness regimen. Talk about taking it to the next level! Even though I have been going to the gym for years, lifting weights and jogging the treadmill, I knew I had to prepare with more intensity to get ready for this. I added in actual running outside (and I usually hate running), along with a more advanced weight training plan and proper nutrition over the eight weeks leading up to the dash. Plus, it had been many years since I actually competed in an actual athletic event. I looked at the Warrior Dash as a way to coax my mind and my body back into the athletic arena, and get back into fit shape. I didn’t want to embarrass myself out there!
