Love One. Love All. 5K Races and Acceptance During Pride Month.

This past weekend featured a personal accomplishment for me as I just completed my 21st official 5K race!

Man, I have come a long way since last March when I ran in my first 5K. Sure, I did a few obstacle course/mud run events in the past but those were one-time deals. I would train a while for them then go back to normal afterwards. When one is competing in this many race events a frequent schedule of running and training is required. It’s a necessity and really helped as I hit some PR’s, and ran one of my fastest 5K times yet on a warm sunny Sunday morning at Coney Island.

In fact, this month I participated in two running events that I was proud to be a part of. A few weekends ago I ran in the Brooklyn Pride 5K along with this weekend’s Coney Island 5K. Both runs were very organized and a pleasure to be associated with. Each gave out terrific finisher medals, with rainbow ribbons to hang around your neck as you crossed the finish line, along with extra swag such as dri-fit shirts and rainbow number bibs. Both races were terrific in supporting the LGBT community and Pride Month. I had a blast at each and was honored to be involved with both. It also helped that the weather was wonderful out on both days. Always a plus when running outdoors. Continue reading Love One. Love All. 5K Races and Acceptance During Pride Month.

The Times They Are A-Changin’ in NYC and Across the Land

It’s been quite a week here in NYC and across the good ol’ USA, right?

As Bob Dylan wrote and sang so many years ago  – The Times They Are A-Changin’. Those lyrics are so appropriate for what has been happening lately. Especially in light of the Supreme Court’s decision which now legalizes gay marriage across all 50 United States. Now, as many of you know, I never, ever like to really discuss politics and religion unless it’s to poke fun. Most politicians are idiots no matter what party they are in anyway, so they are an easy target. I’m not an overly religious person to begin with. To me, it’s an evil subject matter, unless you pen a blog or column devoted to them. Then more power to you. I just see both as a subject that causes more pain, anger, and arguments than any other across the globe. So I usually steer clear.

Yet, when it comes to this I feel different. I feel as if this is a momentous decision, and one that has such a profound affect on not just this country, but the world. I want to write about it. There has been a shift in humanity. A shift in reasoning. A cause for celebration. After all, more than for political or religious reasons this is a human rights decision. One that should have been made long ago. I have always said “Live and Let Live”. It still boggles me as to why so many people get so uptight and freaked out over two people of the same sex marrying. Who cares? They aren’t hurting anyone. They aren’t hurting you. They want love, compassion, and happiness just like anyone else. No matter who they sleep with, live with, kiss, or hold hands with. No matter what a legally binding piece of paper says with their names on it. Gay or straight don’t we all want the same thing? To be happy and live in peace? Fleet Week, Letterman, NYC News, and $30 hot dogs.

Sometimes you read and come across some strange things during the course of the week.

I just read a news article about a hot dog vendor here in NYC that is selling those dirty water dogs along with hot pretzels for $30. Yes – thirty freaking dollars! Are you kidding me? Now, I can see paying maybe $2 for one of those belly bombers but this insane. Obviously, he is feasting upon visitors from overseas that know no better, and even though I’m not a huge fan of most annoying tourists, along with the bridge and tunnel suburbanite crowd that piles into the city on the weekends, even I would put a stop to this jerk if I saw him trying to rip off someone like this. Heck, even I have a bit of ethics in me believe it or not. Maybe sell it for $10…….

Another thing I read today was the story of how a girl’s sweet 16 party was bombarded by flying poop out of the sky! The family and friends were having a get together for her big birthday when feces just came out of the heavens and rained down upon them. They are assuming it was from a plane that had passed and somehow unloaded it’s crapper. Now, my mom and older relatives would always say it’s good luck when a bird poops on you, but I wonder if that would also hold true if big ‘ol Billy Bob dumped his bowels on your head from way up high? Valentine’s Day in NYC. Forever alone or happily psychotic!

On Valentine’s Day remember what you really love about that special someone!

In honor of Valentine’s Day I’m going to go all reverse romance here. Let’s be real. It’s a made up holiday that benefits the greeting card industry and florists. Overpriced sappy cards and jacked up flower costs. Not to mention the horribly expensive and limited VDay pre-fixe menus here in NYC that are shoved down our throats like a ball gag in 50 Shades. Oh, and that horrible book has been made into a movie that just came out in time for the holiday weekend. Suburban sex starved soccer moms are rejoicing in giddy orgasmic bliss! Seriously, if any dudes are dragged to this mess to see it with their gals they might as well wear a skirt and apply a tampon up their mangina. Rotten Tomatoes has given it a dismal approval rating of 29% while IMDB has a rating of one and a half stars. Yet, I read there are plans to already make sequels. It’s just amazing to me what garbage the American public will consume for entertainment like cattle being led to the slaughter. They are making the author a ton of money like she is in the same writing league as J.K. Rowling. It’s just not right. Then again, if this is what passes for quality erotica nowadays then have at it I guess. I’m just happy to have a great gal with me that would rather go see the new action movie The Kingsmen, then head out for drinks after at a dive bar and listen to heavy metal from the jukebox. Now THAT is romance!

Also, as a great alternative to the movie and actually very funny parody of the book if you ever have a chance to see this musical in NYC then do it – 50 Shades! The Musical. Literally, the actor who portrays Mr Gray just kills it!

Hey, I know everyone is different and some love Valentine’s Day. They clamor that goopy cringe inducing stereotype of what the meaning of the day is meant to represent. Each has their own taste when it comes to romance and what gets their rocks off in the bedroom. Do whatever works for you I say. In the spirit of creepy chubby flying angels, cavity forming conversation hearts, broken flavored condoms, and heart shaped boxes of stale chocolates I present a few images in honor of this day of love! Ahhhh romance….. Continue reading Valentine’s Day in NYC. Forever alone or happily psychotic!
