A 5K race on a whim in NYC at Ellington in The Park

o-1

Drinking in the park with a riverside view is just the best way to have a beer!

In my never-ending quest to brutalize my body with ongoing 5K races this year my most recent endeavor led me to Riverside Park on the UWS of NYC. Check-in for the race was at 6pm at Ellington in The Park. It was one of those last-minute decisions on a hot, humid, and rainy day that I am glad I went forward with. Even if at one point I questioned my sanity. How did I not even know this place was here after living so long in the city?

How can you not love this kind of spot? It’s kind of a hidden gem way uptown on the west side and buried in Riverside Park off the 103rd street entrance. Walk down the stairs and over to the right and you will see it overlooking the Hudson River.

There is a small bar up top with outside seating offering great views. Walk the stairs down and there is another larger bar below level with both outdoor and some covered seating. Also offers great views of the river, athletic areas, and the normal backed up traffic on the Riverside Drive – LOL! You can also find the bathrooms down here too. Bryant Park Cafe & Bar – an outside oasis in NYC.

Enjoying my Funemployment with a beer sitting outside on a beautiful warm Summer NYC day at the Bryant Park Cafe patio bar!

Yupper, I have had some major life changing developments over these past few weeks, and I now have some free time on my hands to fill my days, but that is a blog post for another time. As for now let’s just say that I’m taking some much-needed “me time” and exploring my options. Why not do it while enjoying what the city has to offer during the terrific weather we have been blessed with lately? Beer me baby! Continue reading Bryant Park Cafe & Bar – an outside oasis in NYC.

New Taste of the UWS. Three days of gastronomica in NYC!

new

After three days of devourment on the Upper West Side of NYC it might be time to get my butt back in the gym and run non-stop on the treadmill. I am even scared to think about how many calories I ingested, while also doing some serious damage to my liver in the process. Yet, am I really complaining? Quite the contrary! This was three days of delicious consumption of some of what the best UWS restauranteurs in NYC had to offer. Of course, it was like eating my way around the world. A smorgasboard of gastronomic delirium as presented over a three night event called New Taste of the Upper West Side!

I was honored and humbled that my blog was considered to help promote and cover this fine event May 27 – May 30. As I put on my media pass each night it unlocked a world of eats and drinks all under one tent, and in a fabulous park setting, that is a must for any NYC food aficionado to attend and be a part of. It’s not too often that I wave the white flag and cry out “no mas” but after three days of enjoying so much terrific food, wine, beer, desserts, and cocktails I think I need to dry out and detox a bit. It was certainly something I won’t soon forget and I’m actually looking forward to next year’s party! Better start my diet now! Continue reading New Taste of the UWS. People Who Deserve a Throat Punch at the Magic Kingdom!

As many of you following my blog probably know I was away on vacation last week. Traveled down to the “Scary Land” known as Florida. Yup, the state where most of the weird news and happenings seem to come from that populate my Facebook news feed. The territory of Cracker Barrel, Denny’s, and Waffle House. It’s like redneck nirvana down there. A place where the drivers are horrible. Where blue hairs roam the land like zombies, and Billy Bobs with big guts, mullets, and bigger belt buckles dominate the landscape. I swear a passport should be required to go into and out of Florida. This strange populace is lorded over by the man, um rat, himself – Mickey Mouse. Of course, no trip to the Orlando area would be complete without a pilgrimage to the Magic Kindom and Disney World parks! Yes, I do admit that I still love the Disney parks. I’m just a big kid, and will always be one. The rides, the characters, the food, the movies, the shows, all still enthrall me. My family has a terrific timeshare about a mile from the front gate of the parks that we have had forever, and spending time with the parental units at Disney World is always fun.

Yet, as I get a bit older I am losing patience with the things that some of the idiots from around the country, and world, seem to do when here. I think it’s time for a Disney rant! Here is a short list of things that makes me want to punch someone in the throat!

1 – Parents that can’t, or refuse, to control their spawn. Ok, I get it, kids will be kids. It’s a long day at the parks, and can get hot and sweaty. Kids get cranky and tired. Those I can deal with. It’s the parents that won’t even try to calm their unruly kids down or take them outside when in full screaming meltdown mode that irks me. It’s your child – deal with it. Don’t make the rest of us suffer. I’m here to have fun too. Sorry your spawn from Hell is ruining your Disney experience. Don’t ruin mine. Have a magical day!
