Summertime is supposed to be warm, we get that. I know that we can all expect muggy days here and there. Bright weekends at the park. Sun drenched days at the beach. The occasional hot and humid afternoons. Summer in NYC is usually filled with these types of days, but hot damn, this heat wave is hotter than Satan’s asshole! Another day of record heat in the 90’s that actually feels like it’s over 100 outside. Is this some kind of crazy joke that Mother Nature is pulling on us? I feel like I am actually melting if I stay outside for more than a few minutes! I can smell the soles of my sneakers burning!
I actually read today on the Gothamist that NYC broke the all time power record usage. Good lord I hope that ConEd can keep up with the power demand during this heat wave. No way in Hell that anyone wants to deal with a power outage right now. Even the Pillsbury Doughboy would end up baking like a croissant on the sidewalk out here. I am ready too see people explode in spontaneous combustion.
The training has begun. The eating right has started. The blood, sweat, and tears will be immeasurable. The weight lifting will be intense. The running, and I HATE running, will be a labor of love. I will not fail. I will attack this goal like none other. I will not let myself, or anyone down. I will persist and achieve my goal as a St Jude Warrior!
The Warrior Dash is basically a 5K mud run / spartan run through all kinds of obstacles. Jumping over fire, climbing over walls, swimming through mud bogs, maneuvering through embankments, climbing over cargo nets, crawling under barbed wire, and assorted other craziness. Check out the link to view them. It’s an all day event with waves of people participating throughout the day. Why might you ask am I going to subject my body to this mayhem? Well, I am a bit daft to begin with and love competing, even though it’s been a few years since I have participated in any competitions. I just saw this as a fun thing to try out. To get my body back in shape after a few months gym layoff. Then I also saw the wonderful charity partnered with it and knew I just had to go all out. Come Get Some! There are certain things that go into my mindset when trying to dictate if somewhere or something I am reviewing is to be worthy of my accolades. I might not have the most discerning palate, or extensive knowledge of food and wine, but I like what I like. I’m a regular guy and pretty easy to please. I enjoy tasty food and fun places to drink and dine at along with friends that have similar likes. I’m a big fan of Czech and German beer, along with the comfort food that goes along with it. One of the terrific and historic establishments in the NYC area is the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden. Not too long ago a group of us ventured out to this famous beer garden in Astoria, Queens, for a day of debauchery and gut busting beer fun. What transpired during our time there made for some fun memories, and has me hankering for a return trip soon! Continue reading PROST! An historic beer garden in Astoria, NYC.→
Urban renewal sometimes does some great things. In a city where we abhor gentrification, the High Line is a welcome addition to the landscape and shows that a decaying piece of history can be reborn into something new for all to enjoy.
Coming here recently I had my reservations as to what was to be expected of this project as I had read some of the snarky reviews on Yelp and other websites, but kept an open mind as I ascended the stairs to this overhead park in the sky. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed my visit here. With the addition of the 2nd stage this place is huge and you can walk for many blocks taking in the sights and foliage. Now, they are planning to expand it further to a 3rd stage which will complete the project and offer more space to meander about. Continue reading The High Line – A Garden Oasis In The NYC Sky→
