Once in a while the need to escape NYC beckons. Don’t get me wrong as I love my city but there is a lot more to see and do outside of the five boroughs. Plenty of towns up north just a train ride away of only an hour or two ride.

After spending a day trip up in Cold Spring NY wandering around, shopping, snacking, exploring, and sightseeing we checked this place out for a mid-afternoon lunch. It was called Hudson Hil’s.

Great service.
Delicious food.
Quality portions.
Bright country-style decor.
Breakfast served all day.

Take a break from gambling at Dan Rooney’s Cafe & Bar

345Every once in a while we like to do a little gambling, but don’t want to schlep down three hours to Atlantic City. Closer to NYC is Empire City casino, which is really a racino, and while nowhere near as good as AC as the slots are tight it does offer a quick alternative to satiate a gambling crave.

They have done some renovations to the joint, and added in a few new spots to feast at after making a deposit into the one-armed video machine bandits. One such place to have a meal and brew at is Dan Rooney’s Cafe & Bar. During our last trip to the casino we decided to drown our losing sorrows in a pint of beer and a hot meal at this Irish sports pub.

Our verdict? Decent food, beer, and sports bar but overall service is slow and inattentive.

Rotisserie chicken entrée was a solid choice. Sides are extra but the carrots were a good option as they are seasoned great, and onion rings were large and battered well but not greasy at all. Also, we ordered a whole chicken which was more than enough for two people. I felt the prices were fair and the food was actually pretty decent, and a little better than I expected for a sports bar in a casino. We’re Day Tripping North of NYC to Cold Spring NY!

What’s not to love about this quaint charming little village just minutes away from NYC?

If looking for a quick day trip Cold Spring NY is about and hour and twenty-minute ride on the Metro North out of Grand Central station. More than enough running times on the schedule to head out early and get home later in the evening. Makes for a perfect easy getaway to explore this wonderful little town.

Quick walk from the train station so no cars are needed. Information desk is right there at the start of Main Street to pick up a map, and public bathrooms too.

Idyllic setting right on the water. Wonderful views all around and terrific when the leaves are changing. Great location for taking some beautiful pics along the Hudson River.

Walking Main Street is like a trip to a past time. Local boutiques, specialty shops along the way, a few eateries, and the area is very clean and safe. Feels like it’s a small town set back in the 1950’s. Seems like many of the businesses knew the locals who dropped in. Continue reading We’re Day Tripping North of NYC to Cold Spring NY!

When the GPS sends you to Questa Lasagna in upper NY!

Lasagna. Delicious, fresh, hot, cheesy, mouth-watering pasta goodness.

Well, this was an unexpected find in the upper regions of New York State. Not much in this small quaint town that looks like it’s plucked from middle America in the 1950’s, but Mount Morris has some nice spots such as Questa Lasagna which was a terrific food find!

After I ran a Tough Mudder last summer in upstate NY the next day we were driving up to Buffalo and Niagara Falls using the GPS, and it had us pass through this town for some odd reason. Sometimes I think the GPS is a bit bipolar and decides to go off on a tangent. I think we had the “Rain Man” GPS unit. As a storm was just starting we decided to park the car and duck into a few places to explore for a while. One shop owner suggested we check out Questa Lasagna for lunch down the street.
