So here I am all hot and sweaty in NYC. Tired feet and an achy shin. Yet, drinking a cold beer and feeling fine!
In fact, after many cold brews I was feeling no pain at all!
Such was the way I was feeling after just completing another 5K race this past week. This time I ran in the inaugural Brew Hop 5K and Beer Fest. You heard that right – a three mile run followed by booths and booths of glorious craft beer! Being there and experiencing the proceedings first hand I can say that the event was a tasty hit. 1500 thirsty runners were on hand during a beautiful end of Summer weekend to enjoy this unique run along picturesque views of Randall’s Island Park. In the words of Rocky Balboa- “It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward.”
“That’s how winning is done!”
Each year now I put myself through one of these mud runs and obstacle course races. Whether it’s a Warrior Dash, Tough Mudder, Urban Mudder, etc. 3 miles, 12 miles, 5 miles. Each year I end up a bit bruised, battered, bloodied, and scraped up. I do it for a cause. To give something back. Anything.
They say it’s a young man’s game. I’m probably one of the older dudes out there on event day. I don’t let it defeat me. Maybe I’m crazy. Why do I put myself through this pain? Because I can. Because I won’t ever give up. Life is too much fun, and too short, to sit on a couch and watch it all go by. Even if what I do makes a tiny bit of difference in someone’s life it’s all worth it to me. It’s worth the aches and pains my body feels after these races. Plus, I will admit I do enjoy the feeling of accomplishment when I cross that finish line.
I recruited my bud Francisco to get out there with me for his first OCR and we conquered the first ever Urban Mudder NYC in 2015! It was a terrific day and experience. Even with a sunny hot 88 degree day out we crushed it. Boom!
We want to thank all those who offered their support and donations. You rock! We were one of the top 5 fundraising teams for the Make A Wish charity with over $3400! The Make A Wish Foundation was very grateful for our efforts. In total they raised over $40,000 with Urban Mudder. Again, thank you all who helped support us with this cause. There is nothing like a warm Spring day in NYC. Sunny skies. Warm breeze. Birds chirping. The smell of bacon in the air. Bacon you say? Yes, BACON! I’ll gladly throw down a blanket and kick back with copious amounts of crispy sweet bacon and unlimited drinks. I just so happens there is a new event being planning to take over Brooklyn on May 16th and 17th for all those pork loving aficionados out there. The Great Big Bacon Picnic is an indoor/outdoor gourmet bacon festival with over 100 chefs, brew masters, and mixologists showering you with unlimited bacon, extraordinary cocktails, and local craft beers!
I think I just had a bacon and booze foodgasm! This is like a party in my mouth, and you’re all invited! Wait, what? Whatever, just make sure to keep this one on your Spring hit list if in town. If you love, or even like bacon, and enjoy a cold beer or quenching libation on a warm afternoon surrounded by like-minded peeps this is a must go to event!
Can’t get any better than at the Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club in Brooklyn, NYC. Shuffleboard, booze, DJ, cabanas, food truck, and pink flamingo wallpaper in the bathrooms. Drinks in mason jars. Pure brilliance! A unique concept totally out of the ordinary as I love the old school aspect of it blended in with a modern flair. Time to break out the Tommy Bahama shirt, cargo shorts, and sandals. Can’t forget the fruity drink with an umbrella in it.
Man, the last time I played shuffleboard was down in Florida with my long ago retired aunts and uncles. It was always considered an “old folks” game but Royal Palms has bumped it up a notch into the new millenium by making it hip and trendy for the younger generation now. The facility here rocks. Terrific bars on site serving up great cocktails and a good tap beer list. DJ and bands on hand rocking the house. Super airy large location with ten state of the art shiny shuffleboard courts. Cabana seating along the far wall overlooking the action. A built in garage and window for rotating food trucks to come in and serve guests. Shuffleboard leagues. Parties for groups. Bingo night. Live music. This place is just pure fun. Retro styling with a Miami flair. They have nailed it! This ain’t your grandpappy’s shuffleboard! It actually can be called cool to play shuffleboard now.
