Love One. Love All. 5K Races and Acceptance During Pride Month.

 

This past weekend featured a personal accomplishment for me as I just completed my 21st official 5K race!

Man, I have come a long way since last March when I ran in my first 5K. Sure, I did a few obstacle course/mud run events in the past but those were one-time deals. I would train a while for them then go back to normal afterwards. When one is competing in this many race events a frequent schedule of running and training is required. It’s a necessity and really helped as I hit some PR’s, and ran one of my fastest 5K times yet on a warm sunny Sunday morning at Coney Island.

In fact, this month I participated in two running events that I was proud to be a part of. A few weekends ago I ran in the Brooklyn Pride 5K along with this weekend’s Coney Island 5K. Both runs were very organized and a pleasure to be associated with. Each gave out terrific finisher medals, with rainbow ribbons to hang around your neck as you crossed the finish line, along with extra swag such as dri-fit shirts and rainbow number bibs. Both races were terrific in supporting the LGBT community and Pride Month. I had a blast at each and was honored to be involved with both. Running a 5K Through a Blueberry Field!

Time for a new section to be added onto this blog of my life’s adventures. Even though I mainly write about what I do around the NYC area, there are times when I do venture outside it with my fitness and running exploits.  Hence, there will be a new page under the header titled “Running, Fitness, Diet, and Exercise” that will house current and past features relative to this subject.  

Please feel free to venture there now and again to catch up, read, comment, and perhaps even offer some tips and inspiration about your own fitness journey. If applicable, I will feature your post link on this page. Reach out and let me know.

As an avid 5K runner ( never ever thought I’d be saying that! ) I now always look to see if there is an event where I am travelling to. If I have the time I sign up. Such was the occasion recently when I found myself in Kissimmee, FL when visiting parents and doing the family thing.

The Clermont Clay U-Run U-Pick Blueberry 5K race was a quick car ride away from where we were staying so I jumped in. I had a blast running a 5K on the clay roads and through the blueberry fields.

I love blueberries, and could not pass up this event even though I was on vacation. Yes, it was super early in the morning. Yes, it was sunny, warm, and sweaty. Yeah, I’m crazy, but I went to Disney World afterwards!  Continue reading Running a 5K Through a Blueberry Field!

Free Falling Face First into the New Year. Happy 2017!

Here’s wishing everyone a safe, happy, and healthy New Year. 2016 for many was just a total abomination of a year, and as we head into 2017 there is much trepidation and uneasiness of what the future holds in store. Yet, the new year also brings the opportunity for personal growth, renewed fortitude, and better times ahead. It’s times like these that good friends and loving family are much valued, and should be held close.

Life truly is short, and we only have a certain amount of time here on this planet. Stop procrastinating. Make a change. Do something worthwhile. Get healthy. Face your fears. Make a difference. Make amends. Love someone. Reach out. Put petty differences aside. Show you care. See the world. Lend a hand. Do something crazy. Stop worrying. Laugh more. Go for it.

Fit at 50 – A Regular Guy’s Journey Back to Health and Fitness.

Whew. Now that was a grinding run I thought to myself as I crossed the finish line of my twelfth 5K race of the year.

The journey that brought me to this point on a cold and blustery day was one that I did not even fathom way back on Valentine’s Day weekend when this all started. It was also a frigid day back on that afternoon when I finally succumbed to the reality that I looked and felt like crap. Oh, there was no mistake about how I looked. Perhaps I was in denial for months and had settled into the winter malaise that most adhere to, and use as an excuse to let themselves go. Yet, it was more than that. Much more. I have always been an active person with an upbeat and youthful outlook, and from what I have been told, appear younger than my chronological age. That all seemed to fall apart as the winter of 2015 dragged into 2016 and I was feeling the damage of what I had done to myself physically. On that cold windy day in February as I participated in the Cupid’s Undie Run for charity I hit rock bottom. I was out of breath and huffing it after jogging less than a mile. I felt like a slug, and after seeing pictures of my bloated form, looked like one. Even worse, after I had sent my parents some pics of me at the event they mentioned that I looked kind of portly.
